Find the nearest hotel and camp out there.

Go to the village during the day, prepared to sleep and generally be ignored until they need some money to buy food, whiskey, smokes, whiskey, gasoline, rice, whiskey, chickens, cokes and.....oh, yes, did I mention whiskey?

Next time the opportunity presents itself to go up-country, you can diplomatically refuse it. You have served your time in hell.

I had the chance to go up country on my last trip, but my girl let me out easy. I kinda regret not going, you know for the "experience". But after the return of the party, I was glad that I didn't go, at least under those circumstances. 13 hr. minibus drive each way, that alone would be enough for me to say no way. Not to mention, I don't drink and it was a drunk fest from the time they drove away untill they returned.

It was much better for me to stay in Pattaya and have some fun on my own while my best girl was on her little trip. Sorry for you that doesn't sound like an option.

I had the priviledge to enjoy a couple days up in Kamphaeng Phet myself. I had no idea what to expect so the bathroom was not the only surprise to me.

I regard my trip up there to be my favorite part of my travels though. It was an invaluable experience and I treasure the photos of the thai family and exotic locations that I now have here to look at. As others have said, without a command of the thai language it can be a bit boring at times as you sit there like an idiot watching other people talk, but going out for walks to take pictures or just look around was entertaining enough for me. The girl I was with did quite a good job of giving me tours and even took me to go swimming in a waterfall. I also got to watch Muay Thai on television sunday afternoon with her father.

I would highly recommend a trip like that to anyone as long as you can keep your mind open to the new things.

If you go around like a fair bunch of the posters in this thread thinking you are meant to be the walking wallet, not surprisingly, you will be. I would explain this clearly in advance - take only a small amount of cash to carry you through, and plenty of gifts. That is enough.

Don't waste your time with black/red - most of the people in the villages will be impressed enough with 100 pipers (which is a far better blend than red which is awful stuff). a 24 pack of grating daeng or similar is appreciated.

Do try to make a visit to the local temple in the first morning you are there before drinking anything. You'll make a donation here. Buddhism IMHO is a philosphy, so you should not feel awkward doing so even if you are a Christian or other religion. This will earn you more respect that pretty much any other single thing you could do.

Do try to be polite, and not act like a loudmouth; complaining about everything. It may seem primative to you, but if it was all palaces, Nana Plaza and Thermae etc etc wouldn't exist would they.

Speaking Thai is going to make life far easier; if you can't then I suggest you bring a book 'cause life won't be so easy to follow.

Presumably you will be staying for a while so therefore perhaps staying in a hotel would be fine; with perhaps a night with the parents; I would suggest you discuss whether sleeping in separate rooms or whatever is appropriate. If she is a "you know what" occupation then probably not necessary.

I would recommend you prepare to spend some time alone; 'cause no doubt she doesn't return home that often; if you took her back to your own country, she probably wouldn't expect you to spend every second with her; I would avoid the same. This is also means less chances to have to deal with awkward people.

I am not sure how this is anymore the "real Thailand" than Bangkok. I suppose it is a different face of how poorer people live and it will certainly be an experience.

I would strongly recommend you take your own bottled water, and don't drink theirs (which may be well water which could make you sick). If you already get sick with Thai food, then this will perhaps be no better. All the more reason to stay at a hotel. Imodium is not a good idea; if you get diarehha you want to get the bad stuff out, not keep it in. Instead, accept you'll probably have the trots, and take toilet paper (which they probably won't use) ; book in a hotel for the 2nd/3rd nights so you have a proper toilet and not a squat; take some gatorade type stuff, and there are other anti diahreha (man I can't spell that word) pills that could help.

I've never used anti malaria stuff; and I am the mosquito magnet in my aunt's home town (Saduek). If you are at all nervous, why not just take it. At the least definitely use repellent.

If we knew more about your level of Thai etc it might be easier; in short though spend some time with the folks; stay some of the time in a hotel and make sure you go to the temple.

So...now it's 2011...late june...we've been together 7 years now. Have a little guy 2 1/2 years old very cute. You know every single word of this post that you guys wrote was 1000% true. I do like her family and they are dirt poor. No sick buffalos but her mom has been in and out of the private hospital graits the family farang.

There is electricty and sit down toilets and so forth now. Her niece who lives with my in laws goes to private school now...I am trying it seems to stack as many cliche's as possible together in one life...

I have to say that I am made exceedingly happy by you mongers. I've made a great connection to Thai life and survived the mosquitos and all.

My wallet takes a goddam beating when I am there in the village still , though not as bad as it would have were it not for all of you!

These TG's are a lot of fun I have to say and this forum should be required reading for any male setting foot in the kingdom.

I had the oportunity to visit Rasi Salai town in Srisaket province. I stayed in her house (a nice one built by her sister and her brother, who works in bangkok as a computer technician, and she). No problem with the toilet or heat (went in Dec).

She gave me nice tour of the town, the school she went to, the play ground she played, the weekly open market, the famous rasi salai river (the dam is taken down now), buddha temple and many other things of a small issan town.

The trip was enjoyable. I only stayed for 5 days. I was sick for two days becuase of some flu like virus I think. As soon as my fever went down, I got an excuse to board the next day morning flight and come to bangkok. She satyed for a week and returned after that
