I have never had a falang beg for money, but I have been stopped many times by Thai's and asked if I could "lend" them some money. They did understand the universal "f*** off" Glosterboy

Quote: from scobie on 3:40 pm on May 16, 2005 I guess he figured that as a fellow farang I have some sort of moral responsibility to help him. Stuff that. As a farang he has numerous opportunities to either earn a living here in Thailand (even as a teacher) or go home and get the dole. 50 million Thais should be so lucky.
I have said it before and I will say it again.... There is good money for english teachers to be made down at the docks servicing sailors! The poor Bugger/begger.... I was at the Brit Embassy getting a new passport issued, about 5 years ago (they are very nice in the consular section by the way) on my way out there was a Brit sitting on the ground outside crying his eyes out. Well I don't know if it was a scam or not but he had been done with the old Rohypnol and robbery jobbie, had to wait 10 days for repatriation, the embassy had given him 150 quid but he was skint, embassy wouldn't 'lend' him any more and he was f***ed. I know I am daft for doing it but you never know if the same shit might hit me one day... I went to the ATM on the Wireless Rd/Suk crossroads and gave him 5K. I expect to be berated for this soft act but... it made me feel good and maybe a little positive Karma came of it.. Bash PS the next day I won the Brit lottery and now live knee deep in naked pussy... all real, no LBs. (for you serious posters out there, this last paragraph was a wee joke)

Reminds me of my first trip. I met my buddy (a veteran of 9 trips) at Morning2Night at Nana, and there's this derelict hanging out with him. Late 20s/early 30s, torn jeans, torn shirt, stunk, unwashed. My buddy introduced him as a 'fellow brit', and the guy instantly attached himself to me and told me his sob story -- he's had his passport and wallet stolen, and had nowhere to go, and couldn't get home -- would I help him out WITH A DRINK! My response was that if a drink is his biggest problem, he's got no problems at all -- of course, he then laid in that he needed money to get himself taken care of. I suggested numerous ways to fix his solution - including going to the embassy to get a new passport, and then getting the airlines to issue him a new ticket home. He kept reiterating how that requires money -- so I suggested I'd take him to the embasy and pay for his passport, but his eyes just shifted into 'I'm not listening mode', and he started his entire spiel from the beginning, again, word for word. Essentially, the guy wanted money, and he was a professional beggar, with a very bad scam. I bought him a beer, the extent of my generosity, and he sauntered off -- at which point my buddy went on how he felt for the guy, how terrible his fate was, etc... Turns out he gave him around 1,000 Baht to 'help him out'. Just because he's a fellow Brit! What the f***!!!?? But, apparently, the sob-story scam works, at least on brits. I'm sorry, but I'm with scobie on this one - I don't care if it's a 'fellow european', but if you resort to begging, you can pretty much slag off... I have about 5-6 alternative emergency rip-cords I can pull in case something bad happens to me on a trip, I expect that other people should at least be equally prepared and protected. Dr. von Quack!

About 6 months ago I was walking to catch a cab near Khao San when I British guy about 50 or so asked me if I could speak English. He mumbled something about me not punching him because of his football jersey, which I didn't understand cause I'm American. Anyway he gives me this sob story about how some Thai girl stole his wallet and his cell phone, and he needs 120 baht to get a cab to Suhk, and that he was going to Pattaya in the morning and needed to be on time. I felt bad for the guy and was gonna give him some cash, when all of a sudden he tells me he'll sell me his shirt for 120 baht and he takes it off then and there with dozens of people around. My Thai friends were horrified and embarrassed and dragged me away, with him screaming about how all Thai's are thieves and whores as we walked away. When I told my friends the next day, they all said I was a cold hearted bastard for not helping out the poor guy. But one week later one of those friends was walking down Khao San, and the same guy came up to him and repeated the same scam.

But the question - did your friend then give the scammer money, or was he on to him? Therein lies the measure of your friends' stupidity You know, seriously, I don't mind scams, if they are well executed, or if the scammer has a sense of humor about it -- unfortunately, in a high percentage of the cases, neither is true. Either you have scammers with bad attitude, or scammers with terrible bad stories... Apparently, from what I can read, the farang type are the worst in every respect. Dr. von Quack!

Several years ago, I was at Patong Beach when an American asked me if I spoke English. He was clean and was dressed nicely. He told me a story how he had come from Kata Beach that night to meet a girl and she had cleaned him out and if I could help him out to get back to Kata. I gave him 50 baht and he gave a little sigh like "that's it?" He then told me he would pay me back if only I would give him my hotel name and room number. He kept insisting on this. But, screw that. I could just imagine returning to my room and finding it cleaned out.
