Rick435-
It is indeed confusing about the various TV/video systems. When I read your original post, I interpretted it as asking about playback of NTSC tapes on a PAL TV. There are many devices that allow you to do that. Converting NTSC tapes to PAL tapes (or vice versa) is a different process and requires - not surprisingly - a converter. In the mid-1990's, I bought a worldwide multi-system playback and conversion deck that allowed me to watch any tape on any TV system in the world and output any system from any system. I bought mine through B&H Photo in NYC. Check this link:

B&H- Multi-System Video

Hope it helps.

Trust me EP... it does not take much to confuse me...Now I know why them little brown bombers call me paw paw...
I only have about 6 hrs. worth of tape to transfer.....So I do not want to convert them over from NTSC to Pal...unless I have to do that even when I buy the DVD player with a converter....can I just play them in the original format NTSC...when I am over there..?

With the right equipment and hook-up, yes, you can. Just make sure you get a player that features playback of NTSC tapes on a PAL TV. However, if it's only six hours of tapes you're worried about, I wonder if it's worth the effort. What kind of tapes will you mostly be playing during your stay in LOS - PAL or other NTSC? Will you be doing any recording?

Also, if there are problems with playback, it's usually the connection or TV settings that are causing it, not the playback device.

Ricky:

I repeat my earlier suggestion and will give you some personal examples of what I do. I, too, am in my golden years and not terribly technogeek knowledgable, so here goes:

1. I bought a multi-system VCD and DVD player, making sure before I paid for them that they will play PAL, SECAM, MESECAM and NTSC 3.58 and 4.41. When the kind salesperson said they will play all of the above, I gave him some cash and walked out a happy man.

2. I then went to my local TV distributor (called pawn shops in the US) and told him I wanted a multi-system TV capable of playing all systems. He showed me the remote control and, where it calls for systems, I scanned the screen and when I saw the word "automatic", I switched that on and, voila, everything worked. I gave this nice man some cash and walked away happy, also.

3. I ain't got no stinking convertor unless it is inside either the VCR, DVD or TV. I merely have TVs, VCRs and DVDs into which I feed my DVDs and tapes and sit back and watch the show on my multi-system TV.

4. I also have PAL, SECAM, MESECAM and NTSC tapes and have no trouble playing any of them. I don't change any settings or rebuild any TVs to watch anything.

I say again...Wait until you get here and buy them locally.

You are so right expatchuk... that is exactly what I am going to do....I went out yesterday to buy a DVD player....that plays Pal and NTSC...I could of bought one at Future Shop for $39.00...Then he says you will have to buy a converter....And then he says I am not sure if this will play what ever region you will be in...in Asia. I said forget I will buy a player when I get over there......
Who the hell needs all that aggravation.... (ha ha)
