I think what you say, is fair comment.
After all, I wouldnt advice, or recommend anyone to follow suit and do as I did.
I wouldnt though go so far as to qualify, my circumstances as foolish, in doing so either.
Remember, after two decades of experience, and two marriages, and 5 serious relationships with Thai woman, I am aware of what "'not to do".
However mate, in saying that.

The last one (because I took her to Australia) considerably more.
This situation * (building a house on her land)
Needs to be looked at in context.
I was involved with the woman two years.
Over which time her mother pasted away (her father previously) being the eldest she inherited prime farming land south of Chang Rai.
Its no secret, I made the committment to be with her, and would have married her eventually.
I was overwhelmed at the land (farm ) itself.
I would love nothing more than to ride motor bikes in the lush countryside every evening at dusk.
We grow Pineapples, and Mangoes (about 1500 trees at peak)...we also had bass fish in a fish farm.
Which Failed.
The Fruit however didnt.
I burried her uncle who died in our care after 5 weeks.
My error.
I went to the temple weekly.
I wrote many stories from the country, and loved it all.
There was a guy from Darwin in the next village, and he lived in a mansion which he built for 1 million baht.
It was no secret either my house was only 20,000 Australian$$$.
But labour and materials so cheap it was a great home.
The realtionship, and committment would still be going strong (as my choice in woman was good) she was ""reaL"" (she was honest)
I got caught many times * (butterflying) and saw her pain....it was me at fault.
I dont deserve anything back at all, and certainly wasnt stupid, for that involvement.......happiest days!
She wasnt in it for the money....so please be aware of this.
It was I who was foolish not seeing what I had, and allowing it to be lost....forever.
I know you live in Bangkok, so your cynical viewpoint of me might be tainted by this.
But there are some good woman in the north scobie.
She was one of them.
She has offered me 400,000 to buy me out.
Considering my position, this is more than fair.
Over 5 months I made 300.000 profit of her land, 100,000 of this didnt leave my hands.

Remember, sometimes decesions are made based on love.
She had this for me, and me for her...pussy power beat me. : : Young Uni Girls in the north, and Beer bar girls and Go Go girls in the south.
What I ended loosing wasnt so much a few thousand $$when all is done...but much more.
The real lesson here, is when (after many years) you get the real thing and experience sweet "'family living""....

My advice is to fly up to Chang Rai, Take bUs to Phan an hour away, and go to the only "'disco "" in tOwn Saturday night.....*no westerners, but you.
Place ads in regional papers in Thai.
Shift through the replies.
There will be many.
But its not p4p.....Its straight stuff.
Still its refreshing, and take heart many want (thai woman) the oppurtunity to Date a westerner.

Well DG, quite an open and honest response to explain the situation in response to Scobie. As they say, you don't realise what you truly have until you lose it. Of course, that loss is bitterer when you've caused it yourself, when you really knew better.
Who knows...after 2 years, Scobie might find himself in a similar situation or alternatively, protecting his pennies and keeping things on a ST basis....
In relation to the original post, I actually watched the "documentary" titled 'Mail Order Bride'. To call it a documentary is really to place it loosely into that genre. Where it starts and where it ends is quite laughable if it wasn't for the bad filmmaking. What is supposed to start off as a documentary quickly turns into a scripted piece of fiction. In fact, at the completion of the “doco”, one starts to question whether the script began from the opening sequence.
You could try to give the filmmaker (out of some warped form of sympathy) credit for trying to pass this “doco” off with the introduction of conflict situations to distinguish it from other similar films….Nothing like a bit of conflict to rouse the viewers interest and with the chant “Jer-ry…Jer-ry…Jer-ry” 
Anyway, if you want to throw away about 80 minutes of your life and have a laugh at this fumbled attempt of documentary filmmaking – watch it. But the reality of it is that you would probably receive more satisfaction with that time in watching paint dry.
Full compliments to youngexpat for letting us know of its existence though.

I saw this movie a few months ago and I didn't like it. It pretends to be a documentary but it isn't. It starts very believable but after 15 minutes or so you'll understand it's a mockumentary.

Here is a documentary I liked a lot: "Born Into Brothels: Calcutta's Red Light Kids". It is very heart breaking to see that these kids hardly have any future. Even if there is somebody that does her best to save a few kids it seems like a hopeless fight.

Mailorder brides are still alive and kicking. Only the means have gotten a bit slicker. And their numbers are not decreasing, they are doubling by the second. So Pussylover should not ask stupid questions and just type DATINGSITE in google. Only several million hits.
I saw a dutch documentairy here in Holland last year. And it left me with the same feeling as watching baby seals being clubbed, skinned and left to die. The girls playing the part of the baby seals ofcourse.
The filmmaker went to an agency that provided filipino girls for dutch guys. You select a group of girls from a book, you then bring the number down by watching a videotape of the girl. With the remaining 2 or 3 girls you sent some letters back and forth. The agent doing the translation if neccesary. Then you enter the next fase in which the agent brings you to Manilla and let's you meet the girls. That is when my food started to have doubts which way it should go next.
The guys using this agency were such retards that I suddenly found the idea of forced strerilization, the nazi's used, was not such a bad idea after all. Now this were guys that could function "normaly" in society on a lower level like farmer or garbage man. But emotionaly they were brain dead and their english skills would let them starve in a bakery. Which is strange since english is mandatory here. But that was no problem since the agent went with them. (I think I could like that job. Let others pay for your trip to SEA and give them what 1 topic on this board could give them for free.)
So everybody went to Manilla. There the girls came from their hometowns and everybody got introduced. The filmmaker now followed the girls and interviewed them and their families. They were average, nice girls, like DG described. Poor and poorly educated, but with intelligence and a lovely personality. The thought of them getting married to those lobotomized miscreants would make your eyes water. Everybody cried with the thought that their little girl would go and live on the other side of the world. But she would have a better life. Something I would doubt very much. Money is not everything. And some girls will find out the hard way.
Then the guys had to choose and select their girl. One guy realy clubbed the losing girl over the head. And he was to stupid to even realise it. The girl left crying. The final stage was that the guys went with their girls to a beach resort to get to know each other, also totaly arranged by the agent. They slept in seperate bedrooms and I think that was the last peace of luck those girls would have if they ever would get married.
That was about as much as the filmmaker could stomach and he left. He did not comment on the subject, but I think it was not needed. You could figure it out by your self.
To paint these guys for you. They were not nasty evil persons, but boy, were they morons! They were similar to american hillbillies whose most exotic food they ever had was going out for a hamburger. Something like rice would have been an alien substance to them. So I leave it to you to think what a great marriage this will be, with a lot of mutual understanding.
