Quote: from humbug on 6:38 pm on Oct. 20, 2005 Like you are an object of elegance yourself. You should just mind your own business and not worry about how people like me dress.
I don't think anyone's worrying - worrying implies we care about people like yourself... but these folks are certainly always good for a good laugh amongst friends. Regarding being comfortable - comfort and style are not mutually exclusive, though the 'comfort' argument is a favorite crutch for folks lacking style. Give 'em a break, barrafish -- these folks most likely behave exactly as they do in their home country, and they are just as embarassing to themselves.

Regarding dresscode and behaviour someone on this forum (I think it was Scobie) once said: You are an ambassador of yourself. Cannot say it better. If you refer to yourself as a sloppy, grungy and disgusting character so be it. I dress as stylish, neat and clean as I expect my TGF to dress.

I believe that you should dress for a particular situation as you would dress in your hometown, adjusting of course for local weather or custom. There is an old saying - "When in Rome do as the Romans do." This is a good rule of thumb. I have had more than one of my Thai associates roll their eyes or comment despairingly on the rude dress of Farangs. Bottom line is that most of these tourists come for a vacation, offend the sensibilities of the locals, and leave it for the Farang Expats to suffer the consequences of the image they present. Remember --> Armageddon's comin' to a theartre near you!

Quote: from barrafish on 6:02 pm on Oct. 20, 2005 I have lived in LOS for about half of this year and a bit of last year. For me I am 53yo, no glamour model, physically OK for my age, not fat or obese. Bangkok is a capital city of the world, not like London, New York, Copenhagen, Sydney, Brisbane, Washington, but still a capital city. When I walk around the city, go to bars, do my shopping, I see these fat/obese blokes dressed in board shorts and a sleeveless shirt (we call them singlets in OZ). They are sometimes with TG's hand in hand. So I look at them with amazement, would they dress like that in their own country, wandering around a capital city. The TG most of the time has no or little money, but she will have on clothing that is respectable (in most cases), clean shirt, top, jeans and shoes. Yet Thailand people are supposed to be poor but they can still wear nice clothes. I look at these fat/obese creatures who must think, " I am on holidays, I wear holiday clothes". Sure if you were in the bush or by the sea no problem, but in a city, yuk. When I am in casual mode it will be clean shirt, shorts and reasonable footwear. I am not here to make a fashion statement, but these blokes look like f..ken pigs, Poor TG, she must feel embarrassed but money is money. Barrafish.
I 100% aggree with this dude. I remember seeing serveral really fat, pasty 50 something Americans walking around the Emporium. I believe you should at least look presentable when you go out and not like you rolled up on the beach with a budweiser. This guys are an embarrasement, and I have let them know on more then one occasion. I have seen similar tools walking around Nana. After seeing blokes like this, It actually makes me negotiate harder with bargirls, because I say the alternative could be that.

It seems all western countries send their least polished fellas along with the rest. Once when I was in the army and stationed overseas a friend of mine heard how a couple of the guys behaved like tools and asked me if it was hard to get anywhere around people acting like that. I told him that at first it was a distraction but after that I saw it as an advantage. It really is easier to be an eagle when you are surrounded by turkeys... Having said that I usually wear shorts in LOS but I’m clean and when I go out at night I usually where a Tommy Bahama or new T shirt. I am slim but I think that plays less a role actually (unless a person is just morbidly obese) than dress does. I mean even in image conscious California where I live; women throw themselves two at a time at any sweaty fat guy that also has a fat wallet. But usually only if he isn't dressed like a homeless guy. At the end of the day it is "up to you" I'm who I am either way. I have heard more than one TG tell me I dress like "like man with no money"... Also I am told that my silk Tommy's are "like an old man" but I'm not that either. They are pressed and comfortable and I've never had trouble finding an eager lady companion for a roll in the sheets.

Gents, I find that because I take care with my appearance when in BKK, I get all kinds of great and genuine compliments from TBG's like that I am very "hansum man", and "have nice shirt...good colour", "grey hair good", then when I get it coloured (yes I admit it), "brown hair good" too, and that "hair look good long" then "hair look good short" also that my bodily hair is good because..."it keep me warm" etc. LOL LMAO Also I like, when I think I've stacked on a few ponds, "Thai girl like big man, big man have big munnee"....now that is blatant. Seriously, there are some horrible farang sights out there, from all nations. Don't cringe for them, they don't represent us all, just be "an ambassador for yourself" Our sartorial elegance will stand us in good stead with the discerning TG's. Good Morning, Liam

Quote: from bingo629 on 10:28 pm on Oct. 20, 2005 I personally despair at a lot of my fellow countrymen abroad although English by birth I play the Scottish card because to be associated with shaven headed tatted up larger louts or nasty comb-over fat greasy old f-witts is just too much. One just craves a little style and etiquette.
Yes style, like wearing a skirt and pretending not to be a tranny... f***! the jocks, they are worse than the english at footy matches
