As previously posted I was arrested for not carrying my passport even after getting my GF to bring it too the bar for the police to inspect it.
Wasted a lot of time arguing with them but that is a no win situation and ended up paying the 1,000BHT fine ( yes I insisted on a reciept).
Definately carry a COPY!!!!

You had to pay a fine even after you produced your passport?
I would still rather pay a fine then carry it and risk loosing it 
Of course loosing it would be a good excuse to extend your trip 
Sorry hunny but I have to stay in BKK for another month I lost my passport

Yep Bimmher it REALLY sucked,, whats more they actually let me go after seeing the passport then later followed me back to the hotel and arrested me!!!!!!!!!!!
They told my Thai g/f that they had already documented "1 Farang not carry passport" so had to arrest me.
At the main Police station I argued for hour after hour after hour, refused to sign the document because I could not read it ( written in Thai), asked for my Embassey to be contacted ETC ETC ETC. At about 5am some 3 hours after the incident,, the Policeman told my wife that he is part of special team and also work in police part of immigration and if I dont sign and pay "maybe I find it very difficult to get visa next time" f***!!!!!!! Imagine if I had actually done something wrong????????? At that point seeing future fun in Thailand disappearing I decided YES I sign NOW and yes here is your f***en 1,000 BHT,, now give me a reciept you prick ( thank god his English was not good enough to understand what I said but from the look on my face he had the general idea

You could take it higher up if you want to make a fuzz but like he said he he work in the immigration "well thats a lie" I am sure he know some one. Just let it rest. I know there is some kind of stamp you can get from the Immigration that make your photo copy valid. I was arrested without my passport and I came in 2 days after and show it to them and there was no problem. I guess that day they did not wanted to have tea money. I guess you got caught in a "people that does not have passport raid" like some days MC can run without a helmet and next day its "raid for people without helmet"
I mean hotels need to report every day who stay in what hotel. Do you think they do? No they get caught in the "this month raid for the hotels that does not have send us the daily list of people staying in a hotel"

Bangkoksexy,, Actually it was a drug raid,,LOL,,Police closed off the doors and made everyone piss in a bottle and have it tested,,,,I was laughing the whole time as the only things I was full of where Chang bia, Black labels Whiskey and nicotine from cigarettes.
There where TV type camera men there and all,,,,,,
in the end it only cost me 1,000BHT and by insisting on a reciept I know it didn't go in anyones pocket.
The guy was VERY VERY high up in the police because initially I thought I might be able to get out of it as I know the local area commander,,, THIS WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH,,, he was in big trouble on the same night,,,, the raid happened at 2:30am and he was there celebrating
one of his lower ranked officers getting a promotion,, as the raid happened at 2:30 and place was suppose to be shut he was deemed to be "bringing the Police department into disrespect" !!!

I seem to have had success (in the very rare times I've encountered officialdom) in showing my social insurance card that my employer gives me ==but songkom== Seems to indicate I have a permit to be here, which it does.
My posts haven't been showing; wonder if this one will.

a copy of your passport may not be sufficient.
however any other form of ID in original is, e.g. an ID card or a valid drivers license from your country.

Anyone know how to get a copy of your passport autenticated by the imigration so that I don't have to carry my full passport with me.

The thai immigration will not authenticate a photocopy. Best to just carry a photocopy as described above. Personally, in 14 trips to LOS, never been asked by the police for ID but recently I have been carrying a photocopy just in case....

I took the photocopy advise several years back. Went to a color copy machine, tinkered around and fussed until I had a color perfect reduction of my passport that would fit in my wallet [Credit Card sized]. Took that copy, laminated it, trimmed it, and slipped it into the wallet where it waits still, for the next emergency to pop up.
Looking back over the past 11 months of residing here it's gotten me out of two jams at Don Muang checkin counters- while I was flying in-country and hadn't remembered the original passport. Gotten me onto reverse flights out of Koh Samui and Phitsanulok airports. Gotten me through the respective boarding gates of each, hotel front desks, into professional conferences and anywhere else I've found the neccessity to present it, for that matter. Heck, so far it hasn't been NOT accepted at any place.
In sum: For the dozen odd times it's worked me out of a pinch and the little bit of tinkering it cost me to replicate the original, it's a no-brainer to me now. Just do it....

Well I got pinged for dropping a cigi but outside the Landmark, the copper wanted to see my passport, I pulled out my Photo copy, he was cool with that, he then tried to slug me 2k for dropping the but.
He did ask me if I spoke Thai, I said I didnt, smiled ect, talked the fine down to 500 bht and I did ask him if the photo copy was ok, he said it was ok.
This was in last month.
