LBM, I know it is no consolation - BUT you are not alone. Just a few days ago ( on the 26th. Dec. to be precise ) I was on my way to Chiang Mai and while waiting for my flight I patronised a Pub / Restaurant in the Domestic Terminal. My bill totaled to B255 - I gave the waitress B1000 - and got back change of only B245. But either the waitress had made a genuine mistake OR I was lucky because when I gently but firmly asked her for the balance B500 she promptly said "Katort Ka" and went to the cashier and retrieved the B500 for me. Although my incident occurred in the Domestic Terminal and yours I am guessing was in the International Terminal - there does seem to be a patern and too much of a coincidence. If nothing else your post is at least a word of caution.

Arramsey: I don't know this for sure but although I was going to Cambodia, I thought I was in the domestic terminal. Though obviously Cambodia one would think that I would have been in the international terminal. The place I went to was a pub-restaurant, probably the same one. I can bet these scumbags make a bundle off the unsuspecting and harried traveler in a foreign country. I don't want to condemn the bastards or anything but as many people as we know should know about the restaurant/pub and its activities and avoid it or go there and tell them they are dishonest bastards and their business is going elsewhere. Just a postnote, I used to travel to mexico several times a year, many years back and the money changers in this airport had a major scam of short changing travelers on a regular basis. It was even written up in guide books. It happened to me even though I was aware of it, so next trip a few months later I was alert and waiting, and sure enoughI was given about 25% less pesos than I should have gotten. I asked him for the correct change and he said I got it. I did the same thing as in the pub. I turned around and in perfect spanish and then english, and very loudly, told about 100 people in 6 different exchange lines that I was cheated and it goes on on a regular basis in this airport. The airport policia promptly came and although they were gentle in their command asked me to stop. I said the changer did cheat me and I wanted my correct exchange. They took me to their office and questioned me more. I told them I did not intend to leave the airport without my correct money. They let me go, and I went back to the window and again asked the same person for my correct change. He would not give it to me. I did the same thing again and warned everybody in line. Police came again and took me to the office. Same questions, but higyher ranking police. I told him the same thing in spanish that the money was mine and I wanted it. I think knowing that he knew that I knew that the police were involved and I was not going to quietly walk off, he escorted me to the window and I received my correct change. Crazy gringo he was heard muttering as I left with my correct change. I suspect he is more right than wrong, but I just don't like being made a fool of and being taken advantage of.

One one of my early trips, a buddy of mine got shortchanged to the tune of 1000 Baht at the currency exchange counter in the arrival hall of the terminal. Count your money -- but that advice really applies anywhere in the world.

LBM: I am glad to see that there are still guys like you who are not afraid to defend themself when one try to scam them. Some time I feel very very lonely when I see so many peoples just say things like "live and learn", "shit happens" or "i dont want to start a scene in a foreign country for 10 dollars" when they get scammed... If everyone was doing like you did then the scammers would soon stop their bad behaviour, but no, this wont happen, to many peoples are just happy to be scammed apparently! Madfrog

Gus, No these were not ladyboys working in the pub/restaurant, just your garden variety waitresses. But if you look for this place, just look for "pub" as part aof the name and inside the firsst part of the restaurant is closed and then can go thru a door and go to small outside open air part. I have to emphasize that what pissed my off the most is when I went up to the cashier and asked her (nicely) for my correct change she waved the B500 bill in my face and with a scowl, said "you no give me B1,000, you give me this". It was like like waving the proverbial red flag in front of a bull.

I had it at a bank (!!!) in Bangers a few years ago ! I opened an account there and gave the clerck 10K baht to deposit it into the new account. He counted and said it was 9K baht, I just looked at him and said: It's 10k baht, give it back to me and I will count ! So I did and it was 10K, he agreed and only smiled, but I felt uncomfortable about it. For the rest everything went well, just an isolated incident ! Cheers and happy 2006 ! Tilac

I got this same short change crap over a year ago at an outside seafood restaurant in Pattaya. About 9pm. I wish I could recall the name because I wish to give them as much bad publicity as possible. I gave a 1000 bill to the waiter. He brought back change as if I'd given a 500. He said, "I know you gave a 1000 but the cashier says you gave a 500." (???!!!!) So I questioned the cashier, an asistant manager type man, who rudely told me I'd given a 500. As calmly as possible I told him that I don't think he should try to cheat people who've lived in Thailand for years, but I'd bring back the police to help him remember about the 1000 baht. Which I did. As embarrassing as it is to call in the tourist police over such a measely amount, but I was irritated at the lies like this. The police were very alacritous and when they understood my complaint they left their box right away to come back to the restaurant and help me. At the restaurant another manager showed up, plus an old lady who was some kind of manager from a place 50 yards up the road. That hag immediately chimed in, "He gave 500, I saw it!" I asked how she could see it from so far away when she wasn't even looking, perhaps she had eyes like an angel? That got the cashier mad. However the clincher was of course that the waiter said that I'd given 1000, which I had. So the police listened, I spoke Thai with them and explained it all, and they made the restaurant give me the correct change (I never did take the change at the first time around). The fact that this was a large outdoor place (which I'd regularly eaten at on my previous trips to Pattaya) that had good business--but was pulling this nonsense on customers, that really shocked me and left a bad taste. Essentially this could have been a problem between the staff there that they stupidly took out on a customer, me. The next day I realized that the bosses of that place probably cut the waiter 500 baht for what they lost on me. I had an urge to go back and give him the 500 baht they gave me because he stood up for me. However it's hard to really know what was going on and what they were doing or how deep it was, or even who was scamming who in there. Now I do as others mentioned and make a big point of pointing out what kind of bills I'm paying with.
