===================== Anyway, to each his own..... ===================== Let's keep it to that.. However, you must have pretty good ears to distinguish between 128 and 196.... especially if you don't hear them at the same time. Furthermore, nowadays music (except for classical) is of such mediocre quality that 128 will do. If you're looking for the older stuff (1990 or earlier) then this applies for sure. Moreover, not all 100 baht copies are taken from original CDs. A lot of them are compiled (especially those from compilations) from other MP3 CDs. Another reason why they use 128 is that more fits on a CD. The basic thought of the average consumer is, the more the better. BTW The mp3 CDs are by far the best value. Getting around 150-200 songs for 70 baht.. beats the hell out of downloading. I guess you have to adapt your choice though.

Quote: from visitingbkk on 8:06 am on Dec. 15, 2006 Let me know where you find this? I have gotten original CDs from the major stores, no problem. However we have purchased more than 50 CDs from various stalls in town and they are not identical copies of the originals. Many are compilations and even those which are identical (on a track basis) have all been 128k. I spoke to guys at 2 different stalls about this and they said confirmed most of what they sell is 128.
You're talking about compilations that contain MP3s, which for my tastes, are crap anyways. If you stick with the ones that look and feel like copies of originals (not hard to figure out), then you invariably get the better quality - the additional benefit is that when importing them at 192kbps, iTunes will automatically find track information on CDDB™, and name the encoded tracks in iTunes automagically. With MP3s you are stuck with whatever the original encoder named them, and their bad choices in spelling.

The doc is right that, unfortunately, the average consumer is satisfied with mediocre quality. When playing music back on a cheap little player it probably makes not much differenmce, but if you feed the music to your stereo, you will hear the differences between 128k and 192k readily, once you know what to listen for. Certainly, to each their own - I just have different criteria for enjoying my music. I maintain my music library online, and stream it to my stereo -- though when I copy stuff to my iPod shuffle, the 128k quality is just fine.

I assume that you are still talking about encoding MP3s at 128 CBR? I've been encoding my collection at 192 VBR, which is what seems to be recommended by a few places. Also, from what I can gather, the good BitTorrent sites tend to lean toward 192 VBR for some of the better recordings. Sorry, did that make sense? -VS

192 or 128 who really cares, mp3 format is not really to be taken seriously if you after quality is it? If your serious about quality then the setup would be as follows, 2 x Jadis monoblocks 100W KT88 tubes, jadis pre-amp, audio-quest interconnects, CEC mk2 cd transport, Musical fidelity DAC, red dawn speaker cable with some b&w 802's... mp3 is great for your day-2day running around nothing more nothing less, as for quality, the nature of this highly compressed format leaves it lifeless without soundstage or depth.....like a badly mastered tune from a cheap and nasty mastering studio who's mantra is "mastering is about using the wavelab for dummies guide!"
