The service charge is completely used for staff issues, but not only directly paid to them. Staff food is paid as well as broken glasses, tools etc.. But the major part (> 70 %) is directly paid to the staff additionally to their basic salary. ................................ Sorry dude you have completely lost me!!!! A druken farang breaks a glass.....and the Staff pay for it..... No far can way..... I'l keep staying where I always stay

LOL. No, it is not about the glasses broken by drunk farangs, it is for the cups and glasses broken by the staff. We had our problems with this procedure, too, because we are used to other methods in Europe / USA. But we learned that this procedure is obviously necessary here in Thailand - otherwise nobody really cares about the property of the company. It is really like this, believe it or not. And we are quite sure, that the hotel where you will stay in Bangkok will use the same procedure. The Management Livingstone's Lodge Co., Ltd. PS: Somehow we get the impression that this honest discussion develops into negative promotion for Livingstone's...may be we should fire our marketing manager.

I, for one, appreciate your honesty in answering the questions. You may feel you are being picked on but you are the only source of reliable information where we can get some of this information. I always wondered about the service charge and have had a number of answers. I will rely on your version from now on. Keep up the good work and ignore the flames. I don't think it is negative publicity at all.

Quote: from expatchuck on 1:30 pm on Jan. 23, 2007 What about the tip money? Does that get split among the employees or do hotels take a cut of that as well?
I don't know about Livingstone's but there are many, many, many bars and restaurants in Bangkok where money you leave on the tray after receiving your change DOES NOT GO 100% to the staff. There are places I know where NONE of the money left on the tray goes to the staff. And asking the service staff about the policy in their place might not yield a correct answer. I always tip by giving the server the money directly as I am leaving - after they have taken the tray away. That way I know there is a very high chance it will stay with them. Not always, but many times, leaving money on the tray as what you think is a tip is nothing more than paying the restaurant owner more for your food, and your server will get none of it. Again, I do not know whether Livingstone's gives the tip money 100% to the staff - they might. But many, many places do not.

Before people pick on livingstones, people might do some research into the conditions many thai's work under. Frankly, they sound like they treat their staff rather well. i was unaware of the business model mentioned but a few questions in the right places today has enlightened me greatly.

Ditto. I found out about this myself in similar circumstances at Absolut Seven - a girl I know that started work over there pointed out to me that she would prefer it if I were to give the money directly to her, in her hand, as otherwise she would be receiving none of it. (This was a couple of years ago, so not sure if their policy is still the same). Since then, I generally make a point of doing so.

BK, it is Very simple... I work in the hotel business and can tell you that there are a lot of Thieves out there. A Decent Hotel should give 100% of the Service Charge (generally 10% of the amount before tax) to its employees. Unfortunately, Many hotels only give part of it to the Staff... I find this disgusting. However, most hotels that do this (stealing from the Staff) are Thai owned or Thai run resorts.. To me, this is pure theft: you charge the Customer 10% for Service and give your employees 60%... where does the remaining 40% go? simple : Management Bonus or Hotel Revenue.

Yeah, I spoke with a friend from a hotel, and he did mention that some hotels owners pocket a portion of that service charge. Apparently it is "tax free" money, since the tax is computed on the staff's tax tariff. How sneaky!

I am talking "in general".. don;t want to pick on Livingstones.. (just wanted to make that Clear). but to my knowledge, broken Glasses (even by Staff) is an SOE expense that should be Accrued for... a full part of your "Other Expenses". ;)
