very true! Ditto in my TGF's village. A couple of years ago when I was upcountry at my TGF's village, her dad (who is pooyaiban) was meeting with a bunch of men from the village at their house. They were discussing ways to create jobs or opportunities for the kids, as they were all leaving as soon as they could to go to BKK, etc. They didn't come up with anything useful. Much of that generation is absent from the village, mostly older folks or kids, while the young parents are away in the cities to work.
But the advent of the internet and TV has definitely eroded the family unit up there, even in the few years I've seen it. At the "advanced" age of 28, my TGF finds the "younger generation" of people, those in their late teens and early twenties, seem like a whole different generation. Not as polite, and not as plugged into family.

Very interesting post, thailife, but somehow I think the family unit and the bonds of the village are strong enough to defy dispersion for those 17-30yrs bracket.
One of the finest moments I've ever had was in a restaurant in Buriram over the New Years holiday a couple years ago. I was invited to meet the Good Fella friends of the father of a dear friend of mine.
The lot of them- 6 in all- had grown up together in Buriram, been friends since second grade, and had come together every year at that time to renew the bonds. Most lived in Bangkok, all were in their early 50's, and all successful and affluent to a degree.

As for the conversion of numbers of girls and sons leaving home to go work and therfore depleting the population figures....you forget there is always a new one born around the corner and they tend to not get registered for a year, sometimes 2. So the departures are counter balanced by the arrivals....kinda like an airport...only not.

...what I found when I was talking to a lot of bar girls, both in Phuket and Samui (and I spoke to quite a number - of all ages) that came from NE Thailand, was that not one, liked working the bar, and always wanted to return home to be with their babies, parents, brother's & sisters etc...etc...
These girls seemed to hold the family values very strongly within themselves, and it was something very important to them. Even, when asked if they would prefer to live in Phuket/Samui, in a well paying job (not bar -work) they all said they would rather return home.
I also found, that most of the girls work until they have saved up a certain amount of money - then as soon as this figure had been reached, not a day earlier, nor a day later, they are out of the bar scene and return home. As if they couldn't wait to get out.
Of course, i'm sure a lot of them will return, at some future time to bar work...then the whole process begins again...
