Yes, Yurune, you make a valuable point, though I will not point fingers. The reason I had to re-edit my original post and give it some thinking was because of the very issues you raise: reflectivity and reactionism. It's difficult to try to touch upon more than aspect of things.
One thing I did not want to encourage was a backlash of anti-Thai culture postings. What would that demonstrate? I didn't want to exhibit the same irrational "nationalism" that spawns such stupid uninformed articles.
We who live here day in day out, as one member says, do get to know the foibles of Thai behavior. It is hoped that in doing so, we also increase an awareness of our own. An objection value judgement is probably impossible, since every comes from somewhere. But an awareness of that impossibility can make social life more pleasant on Earth.
MickTheKick, "waiting for the strike back from the male Thai population"... There will be no strikeback that I can forsee. From whom? Those bargirls are not the Thai man's ideal woman in terms of beauty or behavior. And in Thailand appearances are important enough to disregard what happens to those who aren't fitting the ideal. Actually this is universal, but happens to be especially exemplified here.
Just like in older times around the world, few Thai men would admit caring what happens to anyone in a lower social rung... Such as women. Especially poor dark rural women. People think in very short term effects. No one cares what they do or what happens to them unless there is money to be made immediately, or the "image" of one situation can be manipulated to raise the "image" of another (usually a person). Thus the police in Nana, etc.
The only men who might suffer are the poor men if their woman cheats on them or leaves them for a wealthy foreigner. However as we have seen (due to the gender relations here) the Thai man is just as likely to try to use that situation to get money for himself, rich or poor. It's an ago-old industry ingrained in the culture, as far as I can determine. The amazing thing is that it co-exists with other traditions as well.

A Thai view - IF it were stated as above - could certainly be considered a legitimate view.

Prostitution has been a MAJOR part of Thai culture long before it received the relatively recent and minor, but far more "news worthy" help, by "old farangs"
FURTHER their prostitution issues are a direct result of THEIR inability AND even of their desire to provide a bettter alternative for THEIR women in particular and their poor in general.
And THAT is a point of view shared as equally by serious social workers as by sex tourists.
So who are these hypocrites, sex tourists who simply participate? Or - or - the hugely wealthy Thai upper class & legislators who are themselves benefactors of the continued economic oppresion of their people, which incidentally insures a steady supply for their mia noi culture, and ready supply of prostitutes, who are BY FAR, MOSTLY for their own use. A THAI culture which NO legislator would DARE tamper with.
And dont try to justify their inactions by saying that THAILAND is just a poor country. It ain't. Don't even begin to go there.

The IHT article included a lot of 'could be' and 'maybe' statements.
The Western press is as out to lunch in Asia as most sex tourists are in LOS.
Fact is most guys living in LOS seem to be doing just fine.
Respect comes when you earn it-seems most have.
So in the end they will be the one's who will manage change with the least fuss.
Us in the Sex Optional Tourist category will find other places to enjoy the sun, sand and sex- if required also.

Chances are good, based on the timing of it's release, that this article is reactionary PR placed by the powers that be in response to the little visit by CNN. Happens all the time. One group reports their bullshit - so the other side spins up their own line of BS to counter it.
This is what we get these days for so-called "balanced reporting."
I'm sure the Thai authorities cringe everytime the western press shows up to do a hatchet job, and cause them to lose face. So this article makes perfect sense: "blame the problem on the farangs."
Truth is only a point of view...

great point, CNN's the Anderson Cooper 360 show has been broadcasting from Bangkok, Phenom Phen, and Myamar all week..
Andersen himself has been based in Bangkok and they are discussing prostitution and black market animal trading..
