Quote from above.............."at the end they didn't get their storage cost, but neither did I get the package; they had to send it back to my friend at their cost." Good one SMEGMA. Nobody wins, especially them Get your friend to send the parcel again and see if the chumps play theitr little game for a second or third time. Eventually they will learn. Trouble is, so many other people cough up the money that they don't easily stop trying. Never been asked for a fee for storage or an amount for delivery. However the Post Office have a charge for holding a letter or parcel per day Post restante.. It amounts to one baht per day. I don't think that that is a rip off. That is also why I made sure that whoever would send me a parcel, would also inform me as to either when they posted it or when the expected date of arrival would be, so that nothing would be hanging around, waiting for me to collect it. I think if an official from the post office or the delivery guys or anyone for that matter wants to charge you extra for a service that is already paid in full, I would want a receipt and the name and /or number of the person who was taking (?) the money, with the understanding that I was going to inform a higher authority, whether it be his direct Line Manager or Departmental boss or whoever.

I've sent more important stuff to my TGF (er, fiancee) by Fedex to her place of work, though it's certainly more costly. I don't trust the Post Office to do the right thing with stuff like that. Having said that, while we lived on Pra Khanong, and used the Post Office that was on Suk near Pra Khanong that serviced that area, we never had a problem with them screwing around with stuff I sent her. We had rented at P.P. House on Pra Khanong soi Pridi 45 and they have responsible staff downstairs who would hold the incoming letters and boxes in a secure area behind the counter. When we rented elsewhere on Pra Khahong, we had to pick up boxes at the post office. - Balls

Those greedy bastards at the post office have gotten me a few times. If you argue long enough and go to the tax or customs department, (for Bangkok, it is at Hua Lampong) you can probably talk them into lowering the tax. I think the best in your situation would have been sending cash via bank transfer. I just asked people not to send me things because I would get so aggravated. If I needed things sent, I would make sure to have them sent to my gf not me (Thai name less like to get ripped off than farang) and to have the person drastically underreport the value at customs. When I mentioned these ripoffs to my Thai coworkers, they were shocked. When I mentioned them to farang, they would reply with their own horror stories. The worst one I heard involved a guy whose motorbike was just taken from him. They wanted to charge him some outrageous "import license"-he refused to pay and their was a standoff. Finally, he told them to send it back, but they told him he couldn't do that because he didn't have an export license. He never saw that motorbike again.

jayh, Underreporting the value is also a staple of mine as well. I always put some bullshit on the customs tag that looks more or less like what I'm really sending, but to the average Thai looks like something of low value they could easily get on the street or at MBK. - Balls

I think the idea mentioned above about getting your parcel or letter addressed to someone with a Thai name, written in Thai is a great idea Farang names written in English must be a far greater attention getter to the potential thief than a Thai name written in Thai. There is the question of trust though, Do you know a Thai person to whom you could entrust all your post and mail ? If not, thenthat is sad, especially if you live here. I was tempted to change my name to a Thai name at one time early on, but then found that I would not be able to write my own name and so abandoned the idea.

I have sent stuff from the UK before and paid extra to send it special delivery with insurance. Once when I paid for the insurance the parcel never arrived in Thailand. There was a form to fill in at the UK post office and that resulted in an investigation being carried out in Thailand. I had insured my parcel in the UK for about £250 and the Royal Mail did not want to pay out without there first having been a thorough investigation in Thailand. A few weeks later the Royal Mail told me my parcel had turned up in Thailand and been delivered. Sure enough the family in Thailand then also called me to say the missing parcel had now arrived. I subsequently read a Thai newspaper article on the net about Thai post office workers (in Bangkok) being arrested by the Thai police. Probably just co-incidence? This was about three or four years ago and I have never had any problems since, but I always pay extra in the UK for insurance. I always insure the parcel for an inflated sum of money so if it goes missing the UK postal authorities will ask their Thai opposite numbers to carry out a proper investigation. That is my theory anyway and it seems to work for me.
