Funny but there is not a single poster on this thread (maybe on this board even) who doesn't know WHO could eliminate P4P overnight in Thailand.
Now you know who I mean. You will have seen his portrait somewhere.
Imagine for a moment that he said that the time had come for it to stop, that it was giving Thailand a bad name in the world and it was his wish that it should cease.
Every Thai would spread his word and feel the need to pass the message to any girl they suspected had not heard it - I doubt I would be able to wander past the now deserted Nana Plaza without my wife repeatedly producing our marriage certificate to concerned Thais.
The same man who can topple military coup leaders by saying they must “go” or halt an angry Thai mob from storming the Cambodian embassy, simply by letting it be known (via the police) that retribution was not his wish. Only one man could totally eradicate P4P and make it seem like it had never been.

Minder,
I disagree. Some person wouldn't say it because it is something that would not be obeyed.
Politically speaking, it is a "deliverable". When heads of state go to meet each other, the handlers put a list of "deliverables" together beforehand so there will be a meeting and then a great announcement of some agreement after.

Minder, I had a similar thought a while back but instead of P4P, my subject was the amount of garbage all over the country. One comment from him encouraging the people to take pride in the beauty of their country and to clean up after themselves would go a long way. It would become a "duty" for every Thai citizen and even those in Govt could work towards increasing the availability of public trash cans, recycling programs, etc.
Of course this is a pipe dream, Bangkok is world renown for P4P, Pollution, & Traffic, fix the pollution if you can, maybe rising fuel costs will take care of traffic, but please don't touch the P4P! It would be a shame for me to actually have to work at getting girls back to my bedroom.

Minder/ TD all do respect the big man has a lot of influence but I think ya’ll are projecting upon him more power than he actually yields. No doubt he has tremendous influence but in large part this is because his image/ authority has been closely managed and applied only in limited situations – and generally when success in the use of such influence is nearly guaranteed (with a few rather major exceptions). The limited situations in which his power is applied lends to the mystic/aura of said power, and helps to reinforce the idea of his power being all encompassing. However, if he were to attempt to wield his power too much and in ways that would drastically affect large portions of the Thai population over long periods of time I think the true limit to his power would soon become evident.

IB, very true in your post. Also, the majority of Thai people have so much disdain for Govt bureaucracy that they want to believe that there is a higher power that can make things happen with a snap of a finger. An example is the BTS system, when traffic jams were at an all time high, there were reports that the "big man" was very concerned and was even driving around undercover to see what could be done. Then the BTS plans were unveiled and it was portrayed as an ingenius idea (some reports even suggested he had invented the BTS). What was not reported was that there was an international contingent of engineers that had been studying this problem for over 8 yrs.
But then again, perception is reality...

I think the same ad campaign that the USA used with an American Indian with one tear running down his check amoung a garabge montage would work wonders if done by the Big Man.
P4P erridication would be impossible. First you would have to erridicate all those Thai women with the bee hive hairdos and caked on makeup. It is no wonder Thailand leads the world in alcohol consumption.

No, laws wont stop it, neither will making the economy good as all it will do is to enable more purchasing power & higher remuneration possibilities! If "HE" says stop it would slow but all you would end up with is Cambodians, Viets & Filipino's coming to Thailand to take up the slack!
