Alternatively you can fly into Cambodia or Laos and then work your way over to Bangkok.
By no means direct, but not that difficult.

Sounds Good! Thanks for all the advice. Still hoping the airport opens; but looks bad from the NEWS reports in the States. They probably need a few days to put the airport back together, after the protesters 'leave'.
Otherwise will have to be a bit creative. Keep a cold one ready...

This is exactly why I always travel via a blimp.
While the travel time is notably longer (22 days with the right air currents), I am never hassled with airport terrorism. Plus, the clouds over Bangladesh are really quite lovely.

booked on the ninth of dec, loads of time, however plan b is Lhr- vietnam and from there onto laos, plane or bus,
over the bridge and im in, ill worry about getting out later,
tourism will be hit hard for some time to come, only us hardcore will be arriving,
good points the pound has rose to 53,
and bargaining with girls will be easier,
any better ideas on getting to udon appreaciated

U-Tapao - Not even the dancing girls provided by a local hotel could cheer thousands of travelers as they tried to flee protest-hit Thailand through this Vietnam-era airbase.
"This is my first time in Thailand and I probably won't come back," said Glen Squires, a 47-year-old tourist from England, casting a glum eye over the crowds.
In the mean time, local hookers in Pattaya announced that they would provide ‘full service’ free of charge. Aom Sometimes was candid and graphic in her description of what she was offering stranded passengers.
Since Friday, the U-Tapao naval base about 190 kilometers (118 miles) southeast of Bangkok has been the only way in or out of the country for tourists stranded by an anti-government blockade of the capital's main airports.
Jasmine from the Guess Bar in Bangkok offered the following advice for stranded passengers: “I know most of you have not experienced the ‘third sex’; but now might be the opportune time to try. “There is total chaos here”, Jasmine commented, “so let’s get the party going: I won’t disappoint you”.
Thai authorities say around 30,000 travelers a day -- both Thai and foreign -- have had flights cancelled since the occupation of Suvarnabhumi on Tuesday in what the protesters are calling their "final battle" against the government.
P P Body Massage (Pattaya) is offering stranded tourists a special package. For 3,000 Baht, you can have a room with three ladies for one night. Full service and a buffet breakfast included. Mr. I WantyourMoney said, “I am offering this special promotion out of my civic duty to keep the girls working. After this emergency I will go back to the old pricing of 3,000 Baht, three ladies and NO breakfast”.
U-Tapao's only other selling point was when female employees from one enterprising Pattaya hotel, taking advantage of the captive audience, put on a traditional Thai dance performance. All American Vietnam vets are invited back to their old haunt at U-Tapao. It should bring back wonderful memories of what Thailand used to be.
