What is inside a mans - ANY mans, from ANYWHERE in the world - head when he makes the decision to smuggle drugs in/out of Thailand or anywhere else? How foolish can anyone be and still stand up on his own two feet?
They think they gonna make a "quick buck", but probably having thought it through for a little while and balancing the risk vs profit ---- not to mention the total lack of empathy for the poor sods using these deadly drugs ---- how is it humanly possible to come to the conclusion: "oh yeah, I understand there is a risk I end up in the nice coozy Bangkok monkey house for an indefinite time and waste what´s left of my life - but sure - it doesnt happen to me because I´m smarter than anyone else! Let´s go!"
And it happens again and again and...... but obviously some idiots do make it since drugs are killing youngsters all over the world. For this idiot and all his likes: too bad Thailand have to pay for their food and accomodation many years to come. Otherwise - just lock them up, never open the door again and let ém rot!

I agree with you to an extent, but with this amount of drugs I have a feeling it was meant for a "bigger" guy and he wasnt selling to youngsters on a one to one basis..
Does that make it right? Hell no and again you are correct they are leveraging the risk vs reward and going for the quick buck.
It is absolutly stupid.....and they get what they deserve for stupidity..problem is this will go on forever and will never, ever, ever, ever end...do I have a plausible solution? no!
If it was something like weed..I say no biggie it should be legal..but you see these rednecks in trailor homes all across America cooking up meth and they get busted and spend some time (1 to 3 years depending on past) in jail and a few learn their lesson, most dont, but I think these very strict laws on drugs is crazy...
I had an acquaintance back in the day that sold ecstasy and he paid his way thru college doing it (rare case I know) and was busted on a set up and served 1.5 years for it. Which is totally justifiable but he then got out and moved to California and got into the residential home flipping biz, probably wishes he was in jail now 
But my point is that this isnt murder or rape and many can come out learning their lesson after a stiff sentence..but true life or death sentence I dont feel is appropriate for this crime...but that is the rule in SE Asia and they rolled the dice...so my sympathy dips drastically in this case....
With that said, should the dude serve 5 years in the Bangkok Hilton for the stupity and the answer is "hell yes" but not ruin his entire life or in this case cost it.
I have never "chased the dragon" but in my 20's did my fair share of weed, blow and ecstasy (I think the statute of limitations is up on that lol!) and gave it all up when I moved to Thailand....wine is my drug of choice now 
but there is NO end to this behavior ever..again with that said I guess he deserves what he gets knowing that was a very possible outcome and you know they knew that was quite possible if not a probable outcome when they were packing it up..
I dont think I could handle the cornicopia of emotions as I checked into the airport with that shit in my bag. I would loose it before they busted me

He deserves the stiffest sentence possible. A deterrent message needs to go out, otherwise these things escalate out of control. Next thing you know people will be smuggling iPhones!

However, and I am sure everyone knows this, the amount of demand will always bring the greed for the almighty dollar (well not the dollar these days but you know what I mean lol!)
This drug thing will never end as it, and prostitution, are quintessential forms of capatilism....as long as there is a demand there will be a supply and no deterant will ever, ever, ever even put a dent in it...
Part of me says legalize it all, tax it thru the f***ing roof and just let Darwanism work its course.....

That's what they are thinking, and that's why they end up in the Bangkok Hilton - while those of us who *ARE* smarter, know enough not to deal with these kind of drugs (cue the usual guys justifying drugs as being 'fun', and how 'real men' can handle them.... then fast forward a couple of years later, to their funeral).

drug consumption and dealings also are handled slightly different in SEA than in the USA, which contributes to why there are stiffer sentences.

You describe it as if there is a happy ending for the successful ones -- when in fact, there never is. Perceived rewards, in the short term, may appear considerable (big money and all it buys) but at the end of the day, nearly all of these guys meet a miserable and violent end.
Not necessarily what I would call rewarding.
