What I argued was not tech, was about smart-assing. And on that, I am an expert with a broader and more refined set of skills than yourself  .... and on that is that I was correcting you. As I said, for a comment to be smart-ass, it has to be derived from the information first at hand, and somehow obvious, not from what you would get from going to other websites (or "expert" knowledge). Exactly.
And yes, the small file is the subtitle file. You will need a player that can read the srt file. Some do this automatically when the srt file is in the same file directory. Some you have to open the srt file after opening the avi file.
I use Media Player Classic.

This also works for DVD players which accept Divx/Xvid movies. Just put it in the same directory. Be aware that the movie and the subtitles have to have the same name.
Or if you want to see the movie on your non-divx/xvid player, try to get ConvertXtoDVD and convert/burn it to a DVD with the subs included.
