If you take any of the organized day tours, the floating market, bridge on the river kwai, crocodile show, etc. you will go to the gem market as the last item on the tour. It is included in all the day tours when you get back to Bangkok.
The tour operator gets a percentage of anything spent there. They are not some shady operation like you'd expect. They are top class shops with top of the line prices. The only thing I would get there, if you are inclined to smuggle it back, and want some, is the small ivory items they have. That is the only things I saw in any of the gem markets you could make a profit on bringing back to the USA, but it is illegal.
The things in the gem market, for the most part, are top of the line gems. These are not the shady gem scams the people around the Grand Palace, or the Erawan Temple try to get you to go on, these are top quality shops.
As BK mentioned Thai movies have English captions. The movie theaters in Thailand are a huge step up from those in the USA, and quite a bit cheaper. You can go the top of the line VIP seating at Paragon that you have your own bed to lay down, and watch from, with private service, but the price is steep.
The inner market streets in China Town are a good way to kill a day, the up from there just a few block is the largest place to buy pirated DVDs in Bangkok, I forgot the name of the street. It is the old thieves market area.
China Town is also the place to go if shark fin, or bird's nest soup is your thing, and then there is the endless lines of gold shops, but don't buy there the handling fee is the most expensive in Bangkok.
I can not recommend the river taxis highly enough. You take the BTS to the Saphan Taksin station then you are at central pier, to the other end at Nonthaburi (stop number 30), and about 1 1/2 hours, and is only bt15, or bt20, depending on the type of boat you take. Return is the same cost. Each stop has something there, with about half having a major attraction worth getting off to see. You can spend days seeing the sites along the river. Pier number 5 is the China Town stop, the Grand Palace is along the river just a few blocks up, Wat Aruun is along the river, then another stop is the easiest way to get to Kao San road, which is worth seeing at least once just to say you've seen it. Remember, the river used to be the major travel, and trade route route.
Another thing to do that not many consider is the canal taxi that runs through Bangkok. It is about an hour from end to end, but it has stops at quite a few out of the way attractions. There is a stop not to far off lower Sukhumvit.
Another thing you can do, and very few people know about this, is take an early morning train to Autthaya for bt45, round trip is bt90, then rent a motorbike right across from the train station for bt200 for the day, and spend a day seeing Autthaya, return the motorbike, and get the train back to Bangkok. It's about 1 1/2 hour trip in third class bench seats. It is a nice day trip, and very cheap. You get a map of the sites with the motorbike rental.
These are just a few of the things I have done in, and around Bangkok away from the girls, but allot of the time I have taken a girl, or two with me. This is just a small start of things to do. If you want a real experience not found in to many places in the world you can go to the forensics museum....lolol.
If you want to get adventurous you can go to the Klong Teui morning market, and try to find where they are gambling. It's not to hard to find if you really look around in the out of the way spots. The same with gambling in the Pratunam clothing market area. It is there if you really look....hahahaha.
If you have a fat bankroll, and a good taxi driver you can also go to one of the casinos in Bangkok, but it's not really something you want to try without a Thai to take you. I had the advantage of 32 years in the Nevada casino business, and my business card to get me in.
There IS quite a bit to do in Bangkok.

Worthwhile:
1 - Wat Phra Keo / Grand Palace
You can do this on your own, but a guided tour is better as you'll hear interesting facts
2 - Ancient City (Muang Boran).
See different styles of temples from around the country in a couple of hours
3 - Lumpini Boxing Stadium
Bit of a ripoff for foreigners, but a nice way to see Thais getting enthusiastic.
4 - Kanchanaburi and River Kwai
See the cemetery, museum and try to take a train ride to the Death Pass or the Waterfall. A must for history buffs.

One time my Thai boss and I got a couple of girls and drove form BKK to Chiamg Mai..... longgggg drive, but you sure see athe country.... stayed in CR and staye dup all night at a disco, then went golfing in the morning with no sleep..... crashed later that day, then staye dup all night again.... then in the morning went golfing again....
