At a few billion US to build a nuke plant, yes the powers that be will let the Thais build a nuke plant, but putting it online, and supply the fuel to run it........no way.

It's like selling the Thais old submarines, they can buy all they want, but to think they have any security, or strategic value over neighboring countries if foolish. Any highschool kid with a shortwave radio receiver can pinpoint their location, as there is absolutely no way they could maintain radio silence for more than a few hours.

Think of the number of generals that would go down with the ship when the first leaks start. All high ranking Navy generals will want to be on the submarines. That is status for them.
Are you claiming the Royal Thai Navy has submarines or they are merely trying to buy some?

There are no "Generals" in the RTN. They use maritime titles, as do nearly all other nations.

Hello gents,

I need advice on travel arrangements...

I'll be visiting Hong Kong from California for a few days in late March/early April. I am planning to get away from HKG for a few days and visit BKK.

My travel agent in California is quoting $800 for a return trip between HKG and BKK (same airfare for Thai and Cathay airlines). Does the price seem right to you guys?

What other venues do I have to book a cheaper flight?

Would it be easier if I make reservations to BKK once I am in HKG? I get to HKG in the last week of March and want to travel to BKK one week after that.

I would apprecaite help from the members.
Best regards...

Shaw, don't book through your agent.

Try checking the Cathay and Thai websites for 'real' prices, I believe $500 is about right for those airlines, or check out http://www.airasia.com a budget airline, you can probably get a return for $300 even less if they have a promotion going.
Good luck.

You can book online from Thai Airways for HK$ 2,462 (~US$ 317). Which reminds me I need a book my ticket soon!

http://www.thaiairways.com

Air Asia's price is US$ 265. (HK$ 2,056)

All of the above prices include taxes and surcharges.

Oh yeah, forget the tour agents.

Thanks, guys.

Thanks for the tips; I checked the airfares on airasia, thai, etc.

Armed with this new information, I was able to stare down the travel agent... who eventually booked me on Emirates (HKG to BKK and back) for USD $395. I paid a little on the high side but was able to get the right flight times for each leg of the journey... which will help me get the most out my 3-4 day trip.

(... and the b!tch was charging me $800 earlier!!)

I am looking into hotels now... have stayed at Manhattan in the past, but leaning in favor of Swiss Park (or even Darjelling) this time around. Reviews on this board are helpful, as always.

Best regards...

Despite only having been to Thailand once, I can respond with knowledge with regard to Darjelling Boutique. I stayed there roughly 18 days during February 2012, so it was very recently.

The staff at Darjelling are very nice and helpful. Some areas they are strong at (Chang personally took me to the Super Rich area where I did indeed find the best rate for exchange during my stay)... Others, they are not (they don't seem to eat out much, or in that area at least, and were not that great in recommending restaurants). I was able to use their help many times, and they were quite willing to allow me to use the computer in their lobby as much as I wanted.

However, in my view, Darjelling is a New York 2 star hotel, as opposed to the 3 star it is given by Agoda.com... It is somewhat run down (specifically maintenance, though it is quite clean), and I ran into two rooms that had problems such as safe that did not work, or bad plumbing. All the rooms have dvd players, but they don't have many videos at all to borrow/rent. There's no restaurant or buffet, and the refridgerator food is extremely expensive and minimal. There is no pool. The Air Conditioner works great when you are in the room, but it does not work while you are gone so you may return to a sauna.

The true strength of Darjelling is its location. Difficult to find the first time due to it NOT being visible from the street, it is never the less VERY close to the Asoke Station (Soi Cowboy street), making it an excellent launch point to get through out town.

Depending on your desired room rate, Darjelling can be a good choice. I got it for $38.00 American Dollars. If you're willing to spend 10 dollars more, however, I'd probably pick Majestic Suites, which is even better located (Nana Plaza), and includes a breakfast with the room rate. It LOOKED like a better place as well, however I never got to see a room. Never saw Swiss Park or Manhattan at all, sorry.

Hope this helps.

Ridiculous prices -- go to a local travel agent.

Last time I went to HKG from BKK, I paid $300 R/T. Most local travel agents have access to promotions that your CA travel agent might not care about...

Rule one never book an Asian airfare in the west...

Unless the connection is in Asia...doing it.

Good news for Aussies

Air Asia is commencing flights out of Sydney in late April..

You will get up to Bangkok for as little as $750 return....even after the initial cheaper offers.
