The public test runs are suspended for the time being. They may resume next month. The official opening date remains 12 Aug 2004. The system may open earlier, but that will remain the official opening date. Of course of this is subject to change at any moment.

I would suggest looking to 2bangkok.com for updates, that site does a pretty good job of interpreting the Thai language press stories about the subway (underground).

Subway to open July 3

Published on Jun 24, 2004

His Majesty the King will officially open Bangkok’s subway system on July 3.

Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit yesterday revealed that HM the King would also take a ride on the mass transit system that day.

After the official opening is graced by His Majesty, Suriya said the subway system would be opened to the public.

“Passengers will pay just Bt10 per ride until August 12 [Her Majesty the Queen’s Birthday],” the transport minister said.

Sorry Oaktoad but your post some months ago about why it is underground is a Thai urban myth i.e a little bit of truth in it.

Originally called the Skytrain (not to be confused with the BTS) contracts were signed in about 1993/4. There was a dispute immediately afterwards about who had switched some of the documents just before signature and it all fell apart.

This was an above ground system.

In 1996, just after BTS signed their concession agreement, the Cabinet decided all future mass transits in central Bangkok had to be underground.

The MRTA Chaloem Rachamongkon Line (Blue Line) was then let in November 1996 as an underground mass transit. The contractors were predominantly German and Japanese with some Thai (not much use as no experience).

Now for the bit that Oaktoad picked up about the woman in the hotel.

This does not relate to Sukhumvit Station outside Cowboy but to Silom Station outside the Dusit Thani.

The original plan was to build the station partly in the car park of the Dusit Thani which is on land leased from the govt. The lease was due to expire in about 1999. the rest of the station was to be in the Westbound lane of Rama IV between the Thai Japanese friendship bridge and the Dusit.

Of course the cretins had not asked the Dusit about this. The "old lady of the Dusit" 's name escapes me at the moment but she is very very old and very very connected. The Queen comes at least once a week for afternoon tea.

Well the old lady has a fit when she find out her car park is to be seized and acts in a most un-Thai sort of way and the govt. runs scared. This is someone the bureaucrats cannot bully and they sh_t themselves.

The station was therefore wrapped around the supports of the Bridge and deepened considerably such that it could be built without intruding into the car park.

Net result, hugely increased costs and the most technically sophisticated station in Thailand. It is more than 33m deep and something of an engineering marvel.

The extra cost was less than buying the hotel but to use a Trinkism TIT.

His Majesty will open it on 3rd July. you can then marvel at the quality, the granite work, the dedication stone at Hua Lamphong.

The ride quality is better than BTS and the trains larger.

Late this year or next the govt. will let further contracst to extend teh system through Yarrowat and under the Chao Praya and to extend out to Nonthaburi. Further lines will be added, mostly underground, over the next few years. expecxt 65km of underground with 5 years. (10 if you are not Thai)

How dare you complain about the cold. Bring a jacket. The Thai's do that to make the girls nipples stand at attention. What do you think us farangs are the only pervs out there?
