I feel exactly the same as Sukhumvit Boy, I first went to Thailand 5 years ago and got hooked immediately and this wasn't due to womanising either, just the whole vibe of the place and people. I know many fellow travellers hate BKK due to endless heat, pollution, traffic jams and so on, but I kinda like all that as its all part of the experience and adds to the flavour. For me BKK is the quintescential steamy Asian city. Of course the nightlife also helps ! If I had a job lined up or could find decent work out there I'd move out there in a shot. Unfortunately I'm a long way from being old or rich enough to retire, however from Feb I'll be passing through sin city quite frequently at least until next summer. I'm even considering the low paid English teaching as an option to stay out there longer. Has anybody got any experience of that ?

PureMeat, come over the BKK a few more times. In the mean time save enough money, US$10-20K or more if you can, come over here and look for a job or start a company. Or if you can, convince your company, that they need some representation in Thailand, and offer to work here.

As soon as I get back, I start to plan my next trip. Then I buy my ticket or use frequent flyer miles. Now I have something to look forward to.

You might make up the lost earnings by getting freebies, or at least a discount. Private lessons with the best looking ones are to taken in my hotel room.

hi PM, It of course depends on the individual. With 300k and rates of 3 yr. fixed @ 2.75% (this is assuming you're going to keep your cash local), your interest income is about 29 k Baht per month (note that house and cars would have to be paid for though) without ever touching your princicple. Myself, I would be fine spending just that (well, I currently spend more.... but spending only that would still be comfortable).

Quote: from Packripper on 1:19 am on Dec. 23, 2002 Save up your money and retire here. Retirement can be done with as little as $300 k US, in my opinion to live off interest (not including housing/auto expenses).
Good idea, but with 31 the idea of retirement is beyond my "event horizon"... work is still giving me fun. And for retiring with an age below 40 I think 300k $ are not enough... even not for TH.

The problem with that logic is that you assume no inflation. 29,000 baht month maybe fine for now, but it's not likely that it will be fine forever. Especially true the younger you are. Now if you could take it and bank the interest for a while and get some job to keep you around, it might work. Over time, if you were ambitious you could also make some contacts and increase your earnings. But it's a dangerous game to play without some ambition and some self control, IMHO.

Well, if you had 300K, you could live on 40,000 per month (assuming an average exchange rate of 40 B - 1 US$) for the next 25 years. I am sure in that time you would have figured out how to make some more money!

^ I'd rather not spend the principle myself. :p Unless I was dying, that is. Yeah, that's what I mean seubeu (it's not difficult to make a living here once you have a bit of security in the bank). And the interest itself does compound. We paid our semi skilled factory workers 167 Baht a day in 1996. In 2002, we pay them 172 Baht a day. Inflation in the Thai microeconomy is not a terribly ferocious beast. It's inherently slower in a country that has a huge food surplus every year.

I know what you mean, but do you plan to live forever on 29,000 B/month?

Alternatively, stash 270K in the bank and earn 2.75% interest p.a., and spend US$ 1 K of the remainder per month, that way you would have about 26,000 + 43,000 ~ 70 K B/month for the next 30 months. And you still have 90% of your principle.
