"Your post says it all, again this is a PUSSY forum not the THAILAND BUSINESS FORUM. "

I've heard of Traveller's diarrhea, but it usually occurs AFTER you have arrived.  Here, the oral version seems to have presented 8 days in advance.

But who's counting?

damocles,

Unless and until BK says business discussions are not welcome here, I think you can safely ignore BigDUSA and his ilk.

I am very interested in business discussion here, because I, like quite a few others, am interested in doing business with/in Thailand.

One basic comment:  I have come to the conclusion that exporting FROM Thailand has many advantages over importing TO the country. I have concluded this based on the following:

1) Thailand's economy is still weak, especially since the collapse of 1997, so, average Thais don't have much foreign buying power.

2) Considering the above, Thailand needs foreign cash infusion.  Exporting provides cash, can create jobs, and hence is looked upon more favorably by the government.

I realize this may NOT apply specifically to your case, except that it may impact the quality of Thailand as a market for your goods.  Obviously, Singapore is a good market, in general, and I'll have to take your word about Malaysia, since I haven't looked at it at all.

Others' ideas?

Damocles,

got your PM.  Tried to reply but for the life of me I can't get my messenger to work anymore.  Keeps saying that I'm not logged in.

Anyway, just walk right into Chinatown and wander around.   If there's money to be made, someone will take you up on your offers.   Gak-gi-nang

cheers,
Pack

Damocles,

Singapore has a Chamber of Commerce in Thailand, an Embassy, and a Consulate, A branch of the EDB.

All there to help legitimate Singapore manufacturers to export goods from Singapore into Thailand.

AFTA is moving along, ASEAN is there, so I think BigDUSA has something of a point.

MOST OF THE POSTERS ON THIS FORUM do not reside in THAILAND.

VERY FEW of the posters on this forum know a damn thing about importing, distributing, wholesaling, retailing of consumer appliances or electrical products in Thailand, or probably anywhere else.

Thailand has rather high import duties on such items and then 7% VAT which may climb to 10% later this year.

The import duties are applied to the CIF not just the invoice value, and then the VAT is applied to the CIF value plus the duty, so it's double traxation.

You will need a customhouse broker to handle formal shipments (anything beyond the odd sample.)

SO, I am dubious about how competitive your products can be in Thailand versus Thai products, Chinese products, etc.  Singapore's labor costs are quite high in comparison to almost anyplace in the region last time I peeked.

Best wishes, and pls accept my advice to go find a more suitable source of business advice than this forum.

well, of course i am into the idea of doing business with/in thailand and since we already have the product and experience, it would be better to do something which we are already familar with. no doubt the spending power of the average thai is limited but because of the huge population, the market is big.

anyway, we are always open to ideas about other products and opportunity and i am thinking of actually attending a trade fair in bangkok somewhere in april.

Packripper:

thanks for your advice. as a matter of fact, chinatown is one of my favourite food haunts in bangkok so rest assured that i will make a trip there for a look at least!

i understand and maybe i will try the formal approach to these agencies and see what they can do for me.

anyway, i agree that this is not the best place to post business discussion and that most of the people here are foreigners but i believe someone out there may have the necessary experience and may provide the appropriate advice.

i know importing into thailand is a hassle and the taxation is very high which is why the electronics goods are comparatively more expensive than in developed countries.

but no worries about how our products are able to compete with the local and chinese goods because our products are MADE IN CHINA. Haha.

anyway, i will keep you guys inform of any progress.

Regards

Well, my name might not be William Gates; but I bet there is some business over there in a great product called the “Y-Box”. Most men like having a small tight box close to hand. And most men love to eat and the "Y". If we can integrate the two, I am sure many people will want to buy several at once and play with them late into the night.
Once size fits most. Buy now while stocks last.

Not sold with batteries and cannot be sold separately from the life support system. Product may contain deadly diseases. Avoid consuming if shared with a friend.

Well, I can tell you that Tesco Lotus and Carrefour usually offer ("demand") 6 month credit terms.   Meaning that they want your goods for 6 months supply and resupply before they pay you anything.   When you deal with the giants here, you can pretty much expect the same.

If you can handle that, then all good.   You'll probably need to speak some Hokkien and Teochiu if you hope to pierce the middleman market as well.

6 months it is kind of too long in here. In singapore, even carrefour have like only 30 days credit terms. Are you positively sure that it is 6 months credit terms because certainly too long!

and also how about the middleman market? you have any particular contacts?

i will be coming down to bangkok next week so i would appreciate it if you can help me on this one.
