Mr. Wanmuhamadnoor Matha is now Interior Minister, not Purachai. Purachai is Justice Minister, which means, in this case, that there probably won't be any... Still lots of conflict about who-did-what, and I doubt the Interior Ministry had ANYTHING to do with this. The signs are most likely subterfuge... This is going to be interesting... haam sup

The Flip-side of all this is what is going on in Pattaya with the "101" situation. The governement has been trying to get people, and their businesses off from public land for years even threatening what happened in Bangkock and still nothing happens. Granted that is a different situation with the people in Pattaya being little more than squaters but I would be willing to bet that had even 90 days notice been given that a lot of the businesses on Soi 10 would still be there the day the wrecking ball came through. I feel bad as hell for the people who lost everything but it seems that Thailand hasn't learned the "middle road" yet when it comes to dealing with people in its own country. My guess would be that what happened is mentioned somewhere in a contract between the land owner and the sub-leasing company. Then, the real problem is that the land owners can't really be touched because of the middle sub-lease company and trying to get anything from the sub-lease company, which no longer has any value/property would be a non-starter. A shitty situation all around! Ichi

"...where was purachai and Bangkok finest I wonder, no doubt a little graft changed hands to assure they were watching karaoke bars for any late drinkers, rather than protecting the public and their property. This heavy handed act in a prime tourist area amazes/sickens me..." You can say that again. This episode took place in full view of the Sheraton, Ambassador & Grand Pacific. Judging by the number of lights on in the rooms, there were plenty of tourists up and witnessing the entire operation - and it was not an edifying sight. They'll have been woken by the din, which was terrific. Reports seem to conflict about whether the op started at 3 or 4am. It woke me some time before 5, and I can testify that it was still in full swing an hour later. They still hadn't demolished the foremost bars fronting Sukhumvit at that point. Ý So there was tons of time for 'Bangkok's finest' to intervene. I think it says it all that when the cops finally turned up to make their 'arrests', the security fence around the perimeter (not exactly flimsy, is it?) had already been completed. Last night, several dozen out-of-work BGs were camped on the pavement by the fence, holding a little protest party. Several food vendors &c in attendance. Anyway, if anyone wants to offer a little consolation (&/or much-needed business) to some of the victims of this nasty little coup, that's where they are. Ý

Wow, I'd always wondered how David Copperfield does his tricks where he gets large objects to suddenly disappear... little did I know he hired the Thais to do it!
