TWD,

LOL. Hate to admit it, but I also tend to go for the librarian type too. Hmmm, just one of those wierd glasses and pulled back hair fetishes I guess. My TGF had originally thought I'd have to sleep in grandma's house for propriety's sake, so we had a running joke going about her grandma jumping in bed with me by accident, due to her eyesight. But I'll look into it for ya, ha!

An update:

My TGF's Grandma had eye number two done last month and now has vision in both eyes. She has to wear corrective glasses, but her life is now as back to normal as possible. This is good, 'cause her husband has diabetes (runs on the maternal side of my TGF's family), and it is getting successively worse for him. He has been in and out of the hospital up there for the last few months because of it. So at least Grandma can now help out Grandpa, when the need arises.

Kryptonite, you were right about the positive repercussions this would have with her family. It came up most recently when my TGF switched to her new apartment this month (I'll keep those details private, but suffice to say my TGF's mom was at work protecting her daughter's and my best interests). Funny, I hadn't really thought much about that when I came up with the idea orginally, was more concerned what would happen if something went wrong during surgery and bad things happened.

Good on ya, Balls.  You're terrific.

On my last trip to LOS, I was laid up with a severe eye infection.  Over two weeks of my trip was spent in my hotel room not far from Bumrungrad.  I could stand to go outside only an hour or two during the day cuz the sunlight was so painful.  I couldn't even read - only watch TV and enjoy the pampering of my TG.

During that time, I often thought of what it would be like to be blind.  My mother slowly lost her vision over the last 10 yr of her life and I would wonder - no reading, no scuba diving, no drooling at Angel Witch.

We all take too much for granted and I know I appreciate the reminder by the example you posted.

BTW TWD, some of the bookstores are passing out free Harry Potter glasses with purchase of the latest book.  It might help your next TG achieve the ultimate "librarian" look.   5555

An interesting coda to the story about grandma's "new eyes":

My TGF's grandfather (on her mom's side) recently had an operation done on his gall bladder to deal with gall stones. Seemed innocuous enough. So he goes in this week to get post-op x-rays, and viola!, they find that he has liver cancer. This time, it looks like a one way ticket. My TGF's mom told my TGF and my TGF's dad, but she hasn't yet told her own father or her father's wife (my TGF's grandma with the new eyes).

My TGF's mom was thinking she may not say anything to her parents, so that her dad won't feel "sao jai" all the time, waiting for the inevitable. I told my TGF that if it were me, I would want to know so I could sort out my things and make my goodbyes. But this is not "up to me."

Her grandpa is 64, not so old, and a really solid guy. Makes me a little sad to think about this, as his wife with her restored sight is just beginning to really enjoy life around the house again. I guess the blessing in disguise here is that she will get to see him until the end, whenever that may come, and can tend to his needs. But a tough break for them at this point.

Brother Balls two to you for what you did.

In a lot of Asian countries, the doctors don't tell their patients that they have terminal illness.  As you know, the thinking is very different from the west.  I agree with your TGF's mom that there is no need to tell them now.  When his health gets worse, they will know the time is near.
