It's the government university that basically all Thais could go to if they wanted (there are no or very low barrier entrance exams) and the tuition is one of the few universities in Bangkok that is in range of those with little money.
That's not to say it's full of poor people though. Thaksin's kid attends RU for example. It's also known as a place with a fairly decent law school and a lot of "groomed to take over" sons and daughters of generals, business people, and politicians will send some of their kids here (with the rest being sent abroad for study) for good measure. Basically a place for the local kids to get connected and make the next generation of networked people.
If you want to perplex a bar girl or prostitute with a question.... you can ask her why she didn't finish 100-300 Baht a term public school back in Bumblef_ck, Issan and then just apply at and attend RU.

Thaksin's son went to Ramkhamhaeng because it was his last resort of getting his degree. He failed at most other universities and even Thaksin's attempt to pay for a university in New Zealand didn't pay off. Ramkhamhaeng is mainly for 2 types of students:
1. the ones who cannot afford to enter one of the better ones because of money. This group usually has to work hard to make it to the finals.
2. Politicians and kids of the thai-highso who need to have an easy degree and do not want to bribe a lot of money.
I have great respect for group one because of its setup and education style is one of the toughest university. Contrary ABAC is known as the chinese university (noudle soup vendor) were all the kids of people go to school that are not smart enough to go to Thammasat or Chula.
I do employ students from all major universities here and students with an ABAC degree are not really the smartest ones.

Thaksin's kid has a drug problem. Which partly explains his anti drug policy and why he didn't get into Chula. I've met lots of sons of hiso's who live a life of zero consequences and can get themselves hooked on drugs. Actually met a guy who's mom offered him a porsche if he quit. Which he did for 3 months, got the 911 and then started up again.
I think its Ramkhamhang U that offers a sort of self study program for people who work full time jobs. There may be lots of Gclub/MP girls saying they are students at RU, but the question is whether or not they're diligent enough to actually graduate with a degree.
Among my Thai friends at least, ABAC and RU girls have reputations of being less sexually prudish from willingless to engage in casual sex to the various levels of prostitution. However, i think its more of an issue of the more fun girls seem to come from ABAC/RU and not that all ABAC/RU girls are fun. I'm beginning to question if all these girls who say they are at ABAC/RU are actually at ABAC/RU or at least are on a real path to a degree.
