Did you manage to check out Panthip Plaza? ŬIs it back in business?

Oh boy, is it frellin' EVER back in business. Vendors were falling over themselves, tossing DVD movies in my face. There were 'buy 10-get-one-free' deals, and there were the usual "come into the backroom' stores.

Overall, I had absolutely no trouble acquiring copies of:
- Matrix Reloaded (rip off production disk, very good)
- Pirates of the Caribbean (telecine off release print - excellent)
- Finding Nemo (copy off a DVD sample master - excellent)
- UnderWorld (sucky in-heatre copy)
- Kill Bill (copy off Miramax VHS screener - decent)
- The Guru (master copy - excellent)

All at 150-200 Baht (depending on single layer, double layer). Most of the sport DTS sound, but all have 5.1 sound. Most have bonus materials, and commentaries.

Yep, everything's back in business.

Actually the Polo shirts (or whatever brand of clothing) are usually not fake, they are real. Usually manufacturer overruns, 2nd's (usually slight sewing mistake that makes it an odd size), etc.

I do have to agree with Haam in this instance, specifically that your statements are quite erroneous, and wrong.

Yes, you can get production overruns, but those are usually from Korea, or Singapore, and cost in the $10-$15 range. They also differe significantly insofar that they have all the markings of the genuine article (which I am quite familiar with).

The kind of shirts you can buy in Patpong market, Pattaya, or other venues are clearly fakes (albeit credibly packaged), as they lack many of the criteria that identify the real wares - in addition, at 150 Baht a shirt, they are hardly the real thing - not to mention that if they were the real thing, the vendors would not to extraordinary lengths to hide the products under other products, and out of sight, and take you to the back of their booth to show you the goods.

Yes, sorry, but in this case, I would agree that you don't know what you are talking about... sorry.

haam sup, Sorry that yours are fake. Mine are real. Same with the Nike, Izod, etc, shirts I have. I didn't mean to suggest that they are distressed goods. They are made in Thailand for export, and some of it gets sold within the country. I bought some Polo pants that are also real, but the ones I got were a half size (and labeled as such), I assume due to a sewing error. But they fit me, so no problem. Many of the other Polo pants I saw were regular sizes.

hzink, I have been on Sukhumvit when the police have come by looking for counterfeit goods (DVD's, watches, etc) and have seen the vendors swiftly pack things up and hide the illegal stuff. I have never seen them hide clothing, which if it were counterfeit, they would need to hide.

I don't know about all the clothing you have seen, and maybe some of it is counterfeit, but the vast majority of Nike, Izod, Polo, etc stuff on Sukhumvit is genuine IMO. That doesn't mean the name brands are necessarily better than other brands, because I don't think there is any real difference in quality, even when purchased at retail in the US.

Laying down my whip for a while.

In my previous life  I was thr sales director of a major UK sport clothing brand, so I do know a little about how manufacturers get rid of seconds and over runs.

The average price a brand will pay for say a polo shirt is about $4us, by the time this in the retailers it will be for sale at about  £20uk or $30us.
The street vendors in BKK will have paid $2 so if then sold on at 150bhat they are making a healthy profit.

The average price paid for a pair of trainers by all the top brands is $11-$14. The price paid by the brands has no baring on what the retail price will end up at.

Each style is sold for what the brands product manager thinks they can get away with. How much did your last pair cost you, now workout how much profit is in the system.
So its no wonder they can afford to pay so many millions for stars to endorse products!

BTW, if a pair of trainers are retailing for $100, they will have paid about $50, and of course the brand will have paid$11
The retalers mark up on clothing is much more than it is on footwear

OK, I want my whip back!
Anyone seen DG or NM the 2 aussie sheep shaggers?

hahahahah

Trust me, the Polo and Lacoste shirts I bought on Sukhumwit, in Pattaya, and in Patpong were all hidden under layers of local silk merchandise, I was taken to the back of teh booth, and it was all pretty conspirational.

In addition, all of my Lacoste merchandise (*not* iZod, which is a cheaper licensee) says 'Made in France', if it were local surplus product, it wouldn't say, now would it?

I can pretty much assure you that any shirts you buy costing 150 Baht, and fitting these criteria are NOT the genuine article, and that nearly 100% of the 'name brand' products you see at street vendors along Sukhumwit are fakes.

That doesn't say anything about the quality, as you correctly point out, which is no different from US purchased goods. I just get a kick out of buying the fake article, it's that easy.

If you ever paid anything over 150 Baht for shirts, you got ripped. My prices have been in the 120-150 Baht range (depending on time of night).

Yeah, but would the French manufacturer ship all their product 'made in france' to Sukhumwit in order to sell surplus?

You must be heaven on earth to the sellers of fake products. Come to think of it, there is nothing better than the gullible guy that buys fakes and is actually very happy as he thinks he got real ones. Well, given that perception is reality as far as you are concerned yours are real. So they are real. Hmm.... this reminds me of that story of the emperor who believed he was nicely dressed in real Versace.

there is REAL stuff around.

last year I was offered several thousand nike polos.. golf (TW) and tennis. with certificate of authenticity.

they ended up locally. they were offered for the equivalent of USD 6.00

I know of one place where they are selling the overruns or the rejected badges.

Factory Outlet, Ploenchit Center, ground floor.
