Quote from Smegma: ------------------------------------------------ Nose wai for teachers and parents. ------------------------------------------------ A TG I met on my last trip wai'd to me from the chin, but would refer to me as teacher. She say I first for her, that I am teacher. She wasn't following custom.

One of the most ridiculous sights in LOS, is punters wai-ing BG's in all directions on entering a bar.

Agreed, Hardon. You don't ever need to respond to wai given you based on patronage of a commercial enterprise. And you shouldn't initiate one unless you have a relationship with an employee outside of the place.

V-J, not picking on you, but just asking to clarify what you intend to convey -to make sure I understand.... When you say one should not "initiate" one (in the context of the situation you describe).... are you saying 'initiate' a wai as being the first one to.... or are you saying 'initiate' a reply. I ask because the use of "initiate" confuses me as it follows a comment on responding.

The seemingly simple Wai is a gesture of social meaning and those foreigners not knowing the "rules" should be better off avoiding it. Most often foreigners would end up making fools of themselves; or, at worst, unknowingly insult the person at the receiving end. Social hierarchy is an integral part of Siamese tradition which dictates that the Wai is always to be initiated by an "inferior" and the height of the Wai exchanged should reflect the social gap between the two sides. The higher Wai significantly denotes higher status of person at the receiving end. PS: Please don't ask me to define "inferior" as per Siamese values

Smegs, it reads clearly to me, but, okay... Initiate = do it first (wai). It's a seperate sentence because the syntax would be more mangled if written as one sentence. It should probably have been a separate paragraph, but I really hate one-sentence paragraphs. As a general rule, that is. They bother me. And they remind me of really bad Modern Journalism. That mostly exists to allow talentless hacks to fill space. In my opinion. ;)
