Madfrog, Just because Thaksin went to a Catholic school (Mater Dei) doesnt mean he is Christian. He is definitely a Buddhist. Mind you knowing Thaksin he has almost certainly used his eduaction as an excuse to say he is 'christian' as well.

------------------------------------------------------------------ There I was minding my business in the lift at my office building earlier today, when a bunch of chattering young women got off at their floor and I jokingly made to shoo them out (when the doors were safely closing behind them). One of my Thai colleagues said that they were very irritating. I replied, grinning, "but some of them are really pretty though." Colleague replied: "But they're all low class." I went, "Whaaat?!" Asked for an explanation and all I got was an angry, irritated, "I don't want to explain to you. It's common sense." That really made me angry. ------------------------------------------------------------------ So, What is different between Thais calling other Thais "Low Class" when White people calling other whites "White Trash" ? I see the similarity of the two.

Scout - A socialologist will probably have a field day with this one = the human tribal instinct, as also shown at football matches. "My teams better than yours the opposing supporters are c*nts !" You allege being a Ladyboy so I am sure you have had to go through torture at various stages in your life by being called, homo, poof, fag, tranny, sausage pirate etc etc. Then were left hurt, deflated and angry. I am sure Thais who hear they are referred to as low life must also feel the same pain. I believe (I don't know) that this is human nature and starts in the playground. As we get older we learn to be more sophisticated in our cruel playground taunts. But they are still there especially against people who are deemed 'different'. I have seen a lot of happy humorous gays and Ladyboys but I bet few see the unhappiness when the same people are alone in their room?

That really made me angry. ------------------------------------------------------------------ i noticed this a few times once with a friend who had many different lady friends, the ones from nana plaza chated along with er indoors like old school chums, the ones from upmarket places would not speak to her, the times we went for dinner togetaher strange the first time. Also earlier this year me an my brother in law picked up a couple of tarts from in front of nana, we were pissed after a night out one thing led to another next thing I know we are in a st hotel, sh_t happens. A week later saw the same women again she was giving it all ;i look for you, I need you bollocks, bla bla bla. Now I explained to her I was sorry I had a wife already, but she was getting pathetic and I was pissed after an all nighter so I said maybe their was an opening for a mia noi as I was considering moving to Bangkok, in the future. She seemed happy with this idea, but my brother on law suddenly got really serious whispered to me, no good she no money no money. Obviously he has no problems me cheating on his sister but but for anything else her class was completely wrong. Either that or the money a falang brings in. Money talks bullsh_t walks as the saying goes.

Didn't want to fill up the thread, pity you could not get the link as it works for me:- The Sunday Times July 25, 2004 All children to go on ‘big brother’ computer Robert Winnett and David Leppard A NATIONAL database containing confidential details about every child in Britain is to be set up by the government. An identifying number will be assigned to each child so that the authorities can access their records. Details of the proposals — affecting all 13.5m children in Britain under the age of 18 — are contained in cabinet papers leaked to The Sunday Times. All parents will receive letters from the government informing them of the plan, which will be added to the Children’s Bill in the autumn. The central electronic register will hold information on a child’s school achievements, GP and hospital visits, police and social services records and home address. It will also include information on their families, such as whether parents are divorced or separated. The database will be designed to identify problem relatives, including aunts and uncles who have a history of alcoholism or drug misuse. It will be filed under each child’s “unique identifying number”. The decision to create a “universal children’s database” was approved by the ministerial committee on children, young people and families, chaired by Charles Clarke, the education secretary, last month. The government believes that the move will help social services and police to identify and protect children who are at risk of abuse or neglect. However, it is likely to prove controversial. Critics claimed yesterday that it amounted to intrusive, Big Brother-style authoritarianism and would be an invasion of civil liberties. David Davis, the shadow home secretary, expressed concern that private medical and family data could be misused and might contain inaccuracies. “This is a national ID card scheme by the back door, and as such should be open to proper scrutiny and proper checks to protect civil liberties,” he said. “As the Soham murder case showed, computer databases are not infallible. To err is human, but to screw up you need a computer.” Barry Hugill, a spokesman for Liberty, the civil liberties group, said: “They are creating a national database through the back door. You start with information about all children but in 20 years’ time you’ve got almost half the population. “The government may justify it in terms of child protection but it’s way beyond what even the children’s charities wanted or thought necessary.” The plan follows the publication last year of a report by Lord Laming into the death of Victoria Climbié, the eight-year-old who died from neglect and abuse. Laming recommended the establishment of a national database, although the government had previously played down its interest in the idea. However, “restricted” minutes of a meeting reveal that ministers have privately agreed to the national children’s database, rejecting proposals for the system to cover only those children thought to be at risk. The minutes record: “Turning to the question of who the database should cover, the minister for children, young people and families (Margaret Hodge) said that all children should be included. This fitted with the prevention agenda and reduced the risk of stigmatisation. Information collected could also be used to support service planning and delivery.” Parents would not have access to the database but will be able to apply to see details held on their children under the Data Protection Act. Ministers at the meeting, including Hodge, Paul Boateng, Lord Filkin, Estelle Morris and Alun Michael, raised concerns about the technical challenge of setting up the database. The government has been hit by the failure of several new computer systems, including the Child Support Agency, Inland Revenue and the Criminal Records Bureau. It has commissioned a feasibility study into the plans and held negotiations with several firms including Experian, which runs national credit-checking services. According to the leaked minutes: “To overcome the technical problems associated with a national database it might be better to start small and build up.” The aim of the system is to identify children potentially at risk before it is too late to help them. It would allow agencies to contact each other to discuss suspicions outside the constraints of data protection laws. Perhaps your social class will be registered on the computer ? i.e 'C2'

Back to Thailand. Bringing this up again because something just happened again. Oh boy, am I going to have fun with this...*irony* Said colleague (henceforth referred to as Ms ClassSnob), who spurred me to post this topic in the first place, did it again. A couple of nights ago we were at the Suan Lum night bazaar near Lumphini Park. It's a huge place with a non-air conditioned food court/beer garden, shops selling stuff like in MBK or Chatujak weekend market, and a stage like the ones in Hollywood disco (in Ratchadaphisek), Bossy (Thong Lo), even Zantika (Ekamai), or some beer gardens with entertainment. At one stage, when we were alone waiting for other friends to show up for dinner, she said, "This is a low class place." Me: Why? Ms ClassSnob: Look around you, can't you see? Me: But why is it low class? Ms ClassSnob: Because of the band and singers in stage. They are not very good. And the people who come here. Me: But what makes it low class? Ms ClassSnob: Look, you have to learn how to classify people, okay? Me: I know I can, but I don't want to. Ms ClassSnob: Well you should. Me: But there are tourists here. Ms ClassSnob: Then they are low-class tourists. Me: Look around you. To me this is a tourist-attraction kind of place. There are Thais and tourists. Mixed farang-Thai couples, some are families. Does this mean that if I bring my parents here, they are considered low class? Ms ClassSnob: Up to you [how generously ambiguous of her]. Me: So what do you consider high class? Ms ClassSnob: The pubs with music. [she meant the Thong Lo & Ekamai ones, among others. Wow.] Let's just say there was a chill between us for the rest of the evening. And I swear that was how the conversation went, most of it word for word. So my dear forum bros, if you - 1) Step foot in Suan Lum for a German beer, Heineken or Beer Chang, you are low class. 2) Go there for dinner and after-work drinks with your colleagues and boss, you are all low class. 3) Go with your Thai wife or TGF, you are both low class. 4) Bring your family and friends from overseas to dinner and shopping there, they are all low class tourists, no exceptions. 5) Have otherwise subscribed to the Thai class system, AND gone to Suan Lum, you have automatically advertised yourself as low class, even if you are a foreigner. So to avoid this stigma, go to Thong Lo and Ekamai instead. Some members who responded to me when I first started this topic did not seem to understand my points. Well, maybe you could make me understand yours by shedding some light onto the further verbal misadventures of Ms ClassSnob. Other forum bros can also help bring some sanity to the whole thing.
