okay, coming up for a quick gasp of air... Things are going well, better than I had expected. We were married in May and have her Green Card papers in process. Expect that to be granted in early Q1 2009. Also just got her son a visa (he's 10) to come here after Songkran 2009; if he can learn English over the summer we'll see if he can stay and hack school (5th grade) in Amerika. If not, he gets a Get Out of Jail Free card and trip back to LOS. Of course, if he does okay, that means a Green Card for him too. A couple of amusing anecdotes: Rule #1 - Don't assume your TGF/wife has any idea what all those boxes are in your cupboard. I bought shredded wheat cereal and was pleasantly surprised when I found a bowl poured for me, milk and all (soy milk, that is). But when I sat down to eat it, I noticed it tasted VERY salty. Then I asked her, "Ah, honeyja, what exactly did you put in this?" To which she replied, "Cereal only nit noy, so I put in more from other bok [box]!" I couldn't stop laughing. When she asked why, I explained that the other box was a box of salty crackers. An interesting breakfast combo... Rule #2 - Don't assume your TGF/wife knows what those plastic bottles of soap and cleaning fluids contain. This is much more serious than Rule #1, as some of this shit is Drano and very dangerous. She is not yet aware of those Amerikan brands, so I used an indelible marker to write "Poison" and "Danger" on the ones that were, and explained to her what each one does. Rule #3 - Expect frugality, even to the penny. The other night my TGF/wife was having a Bic Mac attack -- yes she is developing a fondness for the almighty burger -- and begged me to hit McDonald's after her ESL class. This is actually the first time we'd been there in the 9 months she's been here. It was late at night and we were standing behind another couple. My TGF/wife was eyeballing the menu scrupulously and asked the million dollar question: "Honeyja, what is difference, what mean 'sandwich' and 'meal' ?" So I explained that one was a price for a standalone burger, the other with fries and drink. She then debated with me for (I kid you not) 3 minutes about the difference between a Big Mac at $3.09, and a Quarter Pounder at $3.19. The lady in front of us finally turned around, I guess curiosity finally got the better of her, and when she saw what was going on, gave me a big smile. Well, you guessed it, when push came to shove and we made it to the counter, the 10 cent difference was too much, so we settled on Big Macs. But I gotta admit, they sure tasted scrumptious when we got home... okay, grabbed a couple breaths of air, heading back down...

Balls, I am only 2 months into my wife being here and the daily amusement is non stop. I am convinced that there is a marble loose is Thai women.... It really is all about the most basic of things.... I concluded that going from the rice paddy to america is a huge jump for them and the daily missteps are too many to list. Maybe I should just section off part of my backyard and make a rice paddy out of it and let her flood it during the one part of the year, then plant rice, then she can sit around and eat som tom everyday watching the rice grow, then 4 months later pick the rice. Then repeat...... Today she made an omelet. bacon and cheese..... she was so excited. she said "i make ohmwet". I looked a ther and said, say it slow, I can't understand what you are saying. "I make ohmwet". Then when I was able to understand the words bacon and cheese, I got it. Sweet girl. I then told her that would cost her an additional blow job per day on top of the one she already is giving me. And it will be an extra blow job a day until she can say the letter "l". Not a problem at I still have "z", "r" and a whiole lot of other letters to go through. Then I can go through the words that she butchers. But God I love her......

Well, thailife, your attitude is not going to promote her pronunciation improvement. If I know anything about Thai women, she will purposefully mispronounce these letters for years and years to come. Bless them.

Balls and TL, Nice to hear from you guys again and cheers! It is very interesting and fun to watch our ladies ingest farangland.....I have posted many of my stories on "Thai Girls in Farangland" We deal with things that others and their farang wives never deal with and it makes (at least) my life very interesting.. LS posted before about his wife having their baby and being back to normal size in a very short period and going to restaurants and getting "looks" and it reminded me of a conversation I had with my best friend whose wife is an attorney.. He is in commercial property development and biz life sucks for him these days but his lifestyle isnt really compromised because his wife is the bread winner these days... I said, "dude, you are so lucky that your wife brings home the bucks...if I was in your situation we would be living on Mrs atl's income and eating ramon noodles." he was like "yea but mrs atl is 3 years older than (his wife) and still has a body of a girl in her twenties and you dont have to hear about the fact she is supporting you on a daily basis, there is little maintenance involved with (mrs atl)....you are the lucky one (my name)." I figure all relationships have the peaks and valley's and our's is just a bit more fun to ride thru as we get to witness our ladies acclimate to another culture... As maybe the case with you guys, I know that mrs atl and her family's lives are much better off now...what mrs atl sends back every month is tremendous for them....and the best part is it all comes from her hard work, I chip in for special things, but she has such immence pride in doing it... it makes me feel very giddy to witness...... as said before, soak it all in boys! atl

Things still going well, we are still waiting for the green card interview, which should happen within the next month. Regardess, Mrs. Balls will be heading over in late March or April to retrieve her son. He is getting excited about coming to live in Amerika, but told his mom that most of the kids at school (except for a couple of his close friends) don't believe his story about going to Amerika. He asked his mom how warm it was here, she told him about -10 Celsius, and he gasped, "Mama, how you stay alive like that?!!" She replied, "You must wear big coat." An interesting artifact of the last year (she'll have been here a year this month) is that she is losing her interest in returning to Thailand. She's beginning to feel that there is really nothing back there for her, and is looking forward to earning money here. She has her work permit but hasn't yet started to work. We'll wait 'til her son gets here in the next couple of months before she does that. She also passed the advanced ESL course she was taking and has been studying the driver's manual for the last two months, as she wants to get a learner's permit and start driving. So she is acclimating well. Despite all this, she is still as frugal as ever and hates clutter in the house (wonder why she married me then, lol!). She still cooks all the meals, washes all the clothes, cleans the house, and gets after me continuously to exercise. She doesn't mind when I occasionally help, but prefers her own handiwork as being more capable than mine in the domestic arena. She's also taken to the George Foreman grill as the best invention since sticky rice, and loves to cook burgers, fish, asparagus, and anything else she can cram in it. Matter of fact, she's cooking me a cheese burger in the thing as I write this... Surprisingly, there are a lot of local Thai women in our small mountain redoubt, and she has joined that lady mafia. I've dropped by at a couple of their gab-fests for lunch, and it's fun to sit around the food on the floor, Thai style, eating kao neow (sticky rice) and all the other stuff they make. Lots of sanuk. The local Thai lady mafia has the same attitude as Mrs. Balls, they prefer Amerika, hate the high price of clothes here, don't mind visiting Thailand to shop as they find most Amerikan lady fashions really ugly, but see their future here. As one recent arrival told me, "You know, Thai man not really romantic like American man. He nice to lady, but not really romantic. When American man (meaning her husband) is romantic to me (she pantomimes putting her hands around someone in a big sweeping gesture) it feel very good to me and make me love him even more, more!" I liked thailife's comment about a rice paddy in the backyard, lol. I've had similar thoughts myself, funny how living here drives you to thinking that way. If we do leave our mountain redoubt here this year and return to our house in the great Southwest, Mrs. Balls has requested I build her a greenhouse so she will have a ready supply of fresh veggies, as nothing seems to grow for shit up here in the mountains... summers are too short. Can't argue with that. She suggests that will give her something to do while I sit on the back porch with my pipe and single malt Scotch. There have been the usual ups and downs, and it does take some patience to get to the end of the first year, but things are starting to smooth out, like an aircraft leaving turbulent air for smoother skies. Her son's arrival will be a big milestone, and will introduce new stresses in our life. So the ride is, in many ways, even after 7 years, still just getting rev'd up. - Balls
