Insecure, bad-tempered and hot-tempered to boot. And insecure people usually put others down. Especially in a class-riven society like Thailand. Hey, I'm far from naive. I know about the class system here. (And let's not even compare it to somewhere like Singapore, okay?)
I'm just waiting to see how members like Abrak and Bkk Banger respond this one. I'm storing up my best points, rebuttals and responses. C'mon, bring it on.

I am with Abrak on his assesment of the girl.
However, the fact is Suan Lum night bazaar is not a high-class kind of place (here we go again  ), so on that she is right. At least not for the hi-so Thais. However, "real" hi-class can go anywhere and play along. By "real", I mean something that I am sure is not what the lady had in mind.

" Low Class " in thai = " Blue Collar " in US. I think your friend is trying to tell you these are "Blue Collar " neighborhoods meaning there is a difference between her ( apparently "White Collar" worker) and these people. I am sure there was a slight disrespect from her part by the way she was saying it ( since most thais have not been brainwashed into being required to be politically correct yet), so she is just telling it like it is. But if you were in your home country and you were trying to tell a foreign visitors that you do not want them to go to certain " neighborhood" during the night, hopefully you were just trying to be somewhat honest and would not think that statement would be considered deragotory because you thought your foriegn visitors may not feel completely comfortable there. It's not right or wrong, it's just people do not feel comfortable in a unfamiliar surroundings. However, if she had a chance to make friends with some of these " low class " people and trying to understand their upbringings, then she may find out that there are real nice people from this kind of neighborhood and there are some real a*h* as well. Same as your home country.

I think manowar pretty much nailed the whole situation - when Thais refer to different classes, they merely do what they were brought up to recognize, and I feel that the whole lo/hi class INTERPRETATION is (again) culturally different.
I'm sure it feels very cool to condemn and judge Thais who are that way, but in the end, all you're really saying is "Why can't they be more like my home country".
Personally, I'm quite satisfied with the way Thailand *IS*, instead of the way some people *WANT* it.
Consider this - you wan things to be more like in your 'superior' country, right? Well, sure, you can have your wish, but bear in mind that it will then include that the women will also end up being more like in your home country... Thanks, but no thanks. I can do without that.
If you miss your own country, I suggest saving yourself the money for the ticket to Thailand - otherwise, enjoy Thailand for the differences in culture, society, and the way people *are*.
Oh, and Jafa is pretty much right on with " And insecure people usually put others down.", though it applies a lot more (again) to western mentalities.

The politically correct view of our western minded concept of " everyone is the same " flies in the face of human reality. People are NOT the same and the differences is what makes this world wonderful and interesting. We all look different ( even identical twins have slight differences ), all were born into different environments, brought up differently, educated and "briainwashed" by our parents, churches, temples, schools, governments, cultures, etc.....differently. But we all pretty much want the same thing : Happiness. So, do all people have the same right to pursue happiness ? YES. Are all people the same ? NO. Can they call their "less fortunate" bros and sis " low class " and we call ours " blue collar", " trailer trash", " bros from the hood".....________,________,_________ ( Fill in the blanks of what you call your "low class " citizens in your home country. This should be educational

Trying my best to represent the low class masses, I am really surprised you haven't told miss class snob to polish your brass knob!
You have entered into a no win debate with a person who has no desire to open her horizons to people being equal. She is wasting your time and making you aggravated.
IMO, accept that you cannot win this debate with her, bend her over, and give her a good pork from behind. That's how us low class people do it!
Or invite her next time to join you at an orphanage to help with the daily meal. Maybe a heavy does of real humanity will be the shock treatment needed to have a change of mind.
