AM, no she is not hi-so. At least not to me. And no she did not pay for all or any of our dinners, except her own. That should answer on other people's minds as well. cheers.

"prolo" Still, the best means I know to describe people, not that *are* lower class, but that, in fact *ACT* lower-class - which is how it works in my country. Subsequently, you can easily spot 'prolos' in other countries, as the stereotype appears to breach regional and geographical boundaries. Harry

Great thread. Excellent contributions from BKK Banger, ThaidUp, Abrak and of course Jafa. Thanks for an hour of entertainment and enlightenment while I read through the whole discussion. Here's my favourite quote from BKK Banger: "As a farang you are hard to classify because they have few clues to your status. If you dress well in a business suit with neatly cut hair, a new mobile phone and expensive sunglasses you will get respect which you do not deserve." Good tip! We're talking about two different types of class here - the class structure of a society and the class of an individual. The class structure of a society is to all intents and purposes a constant. It has too much inertia to change in a short period of time. No sense in becoming frustrated by it. Just learn, adapt, try to understand and use it to your advantage. Or just ignore it. There is only one type of class that ultimately counts for an individual - the class that comes, to quote Saint-Exupery, from the intelligence of the heart. Everything else is fake, transient and bullsh_t. I've met farm girls from Isaan who have infinitely more class than the emotionally-retarded, potatoe-faced inbreds that try to pass themselves off as hi-so in my country.

Well Thais like to refer to farangs who they consider 'low class' as 'farang kinnok' - literally 'farang bird sh_t'. Another expression that I heard the other day was 'minority farang'. From Twinkletoes Here's my favourite quote from BKK Banger: "As a farang you are hard to classify because they have few clues to your status. If you dress well in a business suit with neatly cut hair, a new mobile phone and expensive sunglasses you will get respect which you do not deserve." Seems to me if Thais are judging a farang's class on their behaviour rather than 'who their parents are' that is a good thing. Afterall I reckon a farang who thinks dry humping BGs in nightclubs is cool (wont mention his name cos he has been ignored) - whatever, his background, education or financial status - is clearly a guy with no class.

TwinkleToes: to shamelessly plagiarise your words, "I've (also) met farm girls from Isaan who have infinitely more class than the emotionally-retarded, potatoe-faced inbreds that try to pass themselves off as hi-so in my office/Thailand/Bkk." Hang on Harry (and the rest)...I'll get back to you soon.

But again, which are the rules to be used to define the class of a person? Shall we use Western values or Eastern ones? And who did actually set those values and are they correct and generally accepted? So far only one book comes to my mind and it's the "Galateo" written in the 16th century by Giovanni Della Casa......everything else it's only acceptance of the behaviours of the rich&powerful.......

Forget about the arbitrary class system nonsense. If I lived and worked in LOS I'd be making a pass at every office girl that rubbed me the right way without a care or thought to her status. If my girl wasn't 'good enough' for the office party, then forget the party. Life is too damn short to worry about status.

Quote: from manowar on 12:17 am on Aug. 25, 2004 .... I am sure there was a slight disrespect from her part by the way she was saying it ( since most thais have not been brainwashed into being required to be politically correct yet), so she is just telling it like it is. But if you were in your home country and you were trying to tell a foreign visitors that you do not want them to go to certain " neighborhood" during the night, hopefully you were just trying to be somewhat honest and would not think that statement would be considered deragotory because you thought your foriegn visitors may not feel completely comfortable there. It's not right or wrong, it's just people do not feel comfortable in a unfamiliar surroundings.
manowar, Slight disrespect? an understatement, don't you think? It is precisely the kind of class system here that allows -nay - gives the *right* to people to respect those in seniority/power/higher class, and conversely to disrespect those not in power or of a lower class. Happens in other countries as well, but I want to keep the discussion to Thailand. I accept this for what it is, but it doesn't mean I have to *like* it. In my own country, I would of course warn or discourage visitors from going to certain neighbourhoods. But we were at Suan Lum night bazaar, a place where even the ('low class' according to her) locals go to. Sure it's not the Grand Marriot Resort and Spa Hotel, but if you've been there, you'll know that it's a touristy kind of place too. Edit/add: PopSecret, any nice office gals you know? Wanna trade? I'm happy to send you a couple from my office who think themselves 'classy' enough for any office party.
