CalEden, Yep, I will have some fun explaining in the shop that I look for a CD of a band singing a toilet and mia noi song, LOL! It is too bad what happened after enjoying all these CDs and VCDs for such a long time, I want them back... I hope to find this CD at the end of March, even if I do not know the name of the band. I have slowly restarted my new collection of Thai country music while in LOS the last time and the web gave some good idea, too.

I'm glad some of the bro's are getting some sanuuk out of the AFA website. We really hope to be breaking some new ground here with the show this coming Friday! A funny reaction from the non-Thai asians in town though -- they are not sure if we are laughing at or with the Thais on this one, so they are very suspicious of this show. This is a classic asian expat reaction here -- I guess they get a certain amount of shit locally that makes them feel asian first, and american second. Well, we hope the spirit of the show this Friday will put that to rest and everyone will have fun. Sorry to hear about the CD collection that was lost in the "divorce." Reminds me of my friend's lament about losing his Colt 1911 .45 automatic to his wife when they split -- he got stuck with the Bulldog .44 Special. Could have been worse all around, I guess ... - Balls

CalEden, It went about as well as expected. About 70 people at the start (it was a smaller indoor gallery space). The demogaphics of the turnout surprised us. Only about 10% Asian, and of that maybe 3% Thai. We started with some Lao VCDs, then on to Thai and Cambodia. Ended it with a tour-de-force quasi-acapella piece by Jintara. The show lasted about 90 minutes, and passerbys people came and went and slowly filtered out. Left with about 20 or 30 diehards at the end. This is new for San Jose, and people weren't quite sure what to think of it. The feedback we got from the Asians that came was, "we woundered why you are doing this." It seems they thought this show might cast negative Asian stereotypes, so many simply did not come. The ones that did come were pleasantly surprised that the mostly Caucasian audience really enjoyed it. So in that regard, I think the show succeeded. Notably, the Thai lady who helped us get in touch with Jintara's manager stood out in the room. She had a very different ambiance about her -- she was translating the VCDs to her friend as they played, and her expressions alternated between sad and happy. She was having sanuuk; I think her personality is like most of the wonderful ladies I've met in Thailand, and it set her apart from the crowd, even the other Asians in the crowd. It made me want to head back to LOS. Yes indeed, Thailand is a state of mind as much as it is a place. And a very unique place, I might add. - Balls

Another falang took to me to a place called Lao som mung, or Issan som mung. This is a few miles away from Sukhumvit in BKK. Mix that with TG and Black Label whisky and you will enjoy the memories for the rest of your life! Love that Kaen sound!

Cal Eden The place you have been to in Khorat is called 'Carabao Daeng'. It some franchise kind of music hall, initiated by the famous Carabao band. I have been there a couple of times myself (it really rocks) and I think there is also a 'Carabao Daeng' in the bKK area. Party on shark68

Ad Carabao's place in Bangkok is Tawan Daeng... out on Pattanakarn, two places...one side is rock, the other side of the road is Mor lam. Discussed many times before on here. I'm not sure if Carabao owns all Tawan Deang's (the other on Rama III, never been to that one. Carabao Daeng is also his energy drink.....
