Skin colour is only one factor that Thais appear to take into account.
If it is very dark then the cretinous ones think "lao" or "Myanmar" which are apparently both low class countries to come from. Thais will by and large have never been to either country and will not have appreciated the light skinned beauties that exist in their multitudes in both countries. This is more a myth than anything else.
If sunweathered then it is obviously from the rice paddies. They never seem to consider windsurfing or beach volleyball may have caused it. Obviously being a farmer is a low occupation even though most people in the country have some connection with farming.
But as long as it is light or medium it should not be that crucial.
More important is being well dressed, nicely spoken, new mobile phone, expensive handbag etc. Ability to play several classical Thai musical instruments and a Chulalongkorn education will also help redeem her skin colour. Daddy being a general or other mafia figure will also impress.
Thais are shallow people. Understanding that is the key.

The problem in LOS is that they are the most entrenched, or at least one of the most well-known entrenched ones on the face of the planet. I could also talk about India, but hey I don't live there and I've never been there so I'm not going to go there (no pun intended).
So how do you 'learn the rules'? Are there really any?
I prefer madfrog's suggestion - forget about it and about what others think of you. That's what I've always done. perhaps that's easy because I'm a foreigner.
For myself, I can only think of one rule: don't mix different circles of Thai friends, ie. don't bring different groups together, especially if i'm not sure of their crap -sorry- class.

I have two female friends from home visiting this weekend. One's light-skinned and the other's dark-skinned.
It'll be funny to see how most Thais will initially, invariably mistake us for their own (before it becomes obvious that we're not) - try figuring out our 'class' then, hah!!
They're good-looking too. But sorry guys, they won't make it in time for the RT.

At times it does appear everyone is looking down on someone. But it can be turned to your advantage.
My lady has a way of escaping all questions about her family, background, social class etc. for which she is particularly sensitive being a rich and cosmopolitan child of Asia of exceptional beauty and ability (yes, it is true, she told me).
When asked, "Where are you from?" she answers "Lao"
No more questions. Even farangs don't ask any more questions.

My TGF is from the border to Laos near Ubon Ratchathani.
My family (mum's Thai) is Thai-Chinese and they gave me and her the whole treatment.
My reaction was 1. I give a f_ck
2. Whenever someone asks where she is from,
we say 'Lao from Ubon and LOAO
Actually nobody believes us than as she looks much more Metropolitan than my Thai-Chinese relatives....

You observe. You ask questions.
India is certainly more entrenched - as you can never escape your own caste, no matter what you do. In Thailand, all you really need is money, and you can bridge class barriers (well, it takes a tiny bit more, but money is the essential start - preteding to have light skin helps as well).

I know someone who lives in Thailand and has worked as a teacher. He is either unaware of Thai culture or shuts his eyes to it. He took his well dressed ex-bar girl to a Thai work related social function. To any 'Westerner' he would just be with a well-dressed pretty girl. The Thais spotted it immediately and he was quietly scolded for bringing a girl of THAT class here !
Poor bloke was well miffed. His dream had been shattered !
I don't hear it quite so often now but a common cry in the UK was "we are such a class ridden society' ! What they don't understand is that ALL socities are class ridden but it is often hidden in the culture to an ousiders view. As said before here the US class system is built on money although I am not so sure about East Coast America. I think the college and family background are important there ?? The americans on the forum should be able to answer that one. Likewise the Aussies and Europeans about their class structure.

Money is always the way out of any class in any country. The biggest problem is that once you have moved up in class with money, every legal, and some illegal, effort will be made to take that money away from you. If your family survives in the new class for a few generations, then your family might be finally accepted in that class. Just my observations.
