Quote: from cheapcharlie on 5:19 pm on Sep. 8, 2004 I have 5.1 suround sound on my computer as well.
If you are watching (and listening) to a VCD on your computer, it is NOT true 5.1 Surround Sound. It cannot be since VCDs are only stereo (2 channels of sound) whereas 5.1 Surround Sound requires 6 seperate sound channels Yes, your computer tells you that's it's 5.1, but it's not the real thing. Your soundcard is using a Digital Signal Processor (DSP) to make the 2 channels of sound seem like 5 or 6 channels, but it will not come anywhere close to the real thing like you can get from true 5.1 Surround Sound or DTS (even better IMHO) sound. My HTib (Home Theater in a Box) sometimes startles me when I'm watching one of those flicks that has aircraft flying by etc., as the sound can sometimes come from behind you and then go across the left or right speaker and then fade thru the front, it can surprise you sometimes, really life-like sound This is only available when playing DVDs, and the sound gets nowhere near that good when playing VCDs, even with the DSP on... and of course, we all know that the video quality of DVD is far superior to that of VCD, unless of course you get one of those DVD 5 rip-offs.

Local Yocal, Understand where your coming from, I do not like VCDs either. As I am married to a thai women it is unavoidable, my point was just that they do play on the pc as well as VCD player ( in stereo ). I also have surround sound 5.1 for other media yes war stuff can be fun to listen too. I just got a copy of Robert Hardy's The Wicker Man on DVD from the UK, Fking Brill, I know u have probably never heard of it and it has nothing to do with Bangkok, I luv it though, all about Pagans, sacrifices and anyone old enough to remember Britt Ekland, she gets her kit out (yes I know she is a falang chick-youthful fantasies ya know ). Music is cool 2.

Quote: from cheapcharlie on 5:19 pm on Sep. 8, 2004 Dont you guys have computers, every type of DVD should be able to play on a computer with a DVD player attached, it is much easier to download software if it will not play.
Every type of DVD won't work on all computer DVD-ROM. It will depend on whether the DVD-ROM is either hardware protected or software protected. Quick 101 lesson from personal experience: I had a gateway laptop - DVD-ROM was software protected, downloaded the hack tool and etc etc.... I now have a dell laptop - DVD-ROM is hardware protected, no hacks to make multi region (locks zone after 5 zone changes). BTW - Gateway was prosecuted in Australia for failing to advise buyers that their dvd-rom would be region locked after 5 different zone use. The same applies to freestanding dvd players. If they are not already region free/multi zone/ 0 zone etc etc, you have 3 possibilities: 1. Burn the crack onto a disk and flash the player; 2. Enter a code sequence with the remote etc; 3. Buy a second player to watch those "other" dvd's etc. Now I know you used the words "should play" but the context you wrote implies that you mean "will".

Quote: from jack attack on 4:40 pm on Sep. 8, 2004 a) why not buy original DVD? A lot less likely to fail in any player.
Usually, price, but also, availability.
Quote: from jack attack on 4:40 pm on Sep. 8, 2004 b) the pirates love to 'market' DVD 9 but I was told 9 vs. 5 is all about capacity as opposed to quality. Also I was told you can't tell 9 vs. 5 by just looking at it.
Sure can. DVD-9 is usually a more golden colored substrate, and you can certainly tell so by looking at the area of the hole in the center of the disk - if you see what looks like little bubbles, or marks that appear like the pieces have been glued together, than that's a DVD-9 -- double layer disks are essentially sandwiched together, and the regional DVD plants (there are just two of them) use a golden colored substrate in their production process.
Quote: from jack attack on 4:40 pm on Sep. 8, 2004 Why am I so smart? I just read an article in the Asia Wall St Journal (Fri Aug 27) about this piracy crap.
Generally, most traditional media, while getting about 20% of the ifnormation right, is pretty clueless about most of this tech stuff... Harry

Ok, so Britt Eklund with her clothes off satisfied many a afternoon for us older schoolboys. I actually liked Racquel Welch with her clothes on in 1 Million Years BC... what a rack! Anyway, if I get out my electron microscope while looking through pirate DVD's I will see some bubbles and strate (?) coloring. DVD 9 and 5 have no noticeable quality difference in audio or video according to some websites that have tech discussions. 9 is used when more storage capacity is need for a long film or lotsa extras or many languages. So a pirate telling anyone it is better "quality" because it is 9 is full of BS. And unless I am getting a woodie over 9 vs. 5 to check for all the telltale signs, I think it is meaningless. Now, price vs. availability. Yep, pirates are cheaper but like other software, I have a phobia of buying the priate stuff. I don't buy pirate MS etc. and I don't like to buy pirate movies when I know I can get the original. And there are a lot of places with quite a big offering now on originals... CD Wherehouse (good selection but pricey), DVD Station (alot of region one & two), even Carrefour & Tesco. In Tesco the other day, they had oddball titles (but original) for BT 49!! Others for BT 69 and 99. That is very cheap. And I didn't have to look for coloring or bubbles or wait for some clown to run into the back room to get me the copy (that probably wouldn't work anyway). Last thing, I called a friend of mine in LA who is suppose to know about this stuff from the Hollywood studios. He said that for many older movies the Hollywood guys use DVD 5 and they are not all regionally coded. It may say region one on the box but in reality the disc is multi region. I agree with everyone that if 'news' reaches print, it is probably 'yesterdays' news. It was a reference as to where I got the info on piracy. The good news is there are more and more rental places renting DVD now for BT 30 - 50. Now that is good value. The selection at Tsutaya and Blockbuster is still pretty thin but its getting better. I picked up the original "Gods Must CrazY. That movie cracks me up everytime. I can relate to the guy finding the coke bottle. Its like that everyday in LOS!

I explained earlier, if the movie is over two hours long, quality must be reduced to fit it onto a DVD5

Simple...don't buy them then.

Anything you would actually watch???..very little...Unless Bubblegum man from Outer Space starring Betty Beegrade is your gig. Like I said...I have over 250 pirates and only ever had 3 or 4 bad, all were exchanged bar one that I didn't know was bad until I got it to London.

I like the maypole dance... In the field there grew a tree, and a fine fine tree was he, and on that tree there was a limb, and on that limb there was a branch, and on tha branch there was a bird, and on that bird there was a feather,' and from that feather they made a bed, and on that bed there was a girl, and on the girl the was a man, and from the man there was a seed, and from the seed there grew a man, and from the man there came a grave, and on that grave there grew a treeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, in the summer, in the summer, in the summer, or something like that, then it goes to the school where the techer is asking what the maypole represents. A Phalic symbol miss, is the reply of course the virgin copper looks on dissaproving, quite fitting he gets burnt at the end just about sums it up really. Even today, burn motherf_cker burn..... we don;t want your bullsh_t burn burn burn
