But of course, you never go out and always stay home.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Even if that was true, a certain risk always remains. Most apartments are checked by police every week or so. And apartments should have a file (with a passport copy) of every resident.

Or in London, actually. If you're stopped by a police officer in the UK you have the right to know the officer's name and the police station where they work. You also have the right to know why you've been stopped. And legally, you're right, you don't have to answer the police officer's questions. But (there's always a but) if the police officer tells you that they think you have committed or are about to commit a crime that you can be arrested for, you must give your name and address. And if you don't you will be arrested.

And a friend of mine was arrested for 'drinking without a passport' and spent the night in a cell. He now carries a photocopy of his passport at all times.

If the police officer thinks you have committed a crime, then chances are that you are getting arrested anyway (unlike BKK most officers wont accept GBP20 to look the other way).

If they think you are about to commit a crime, they'd better have reasonable suspicion or they are looking at unlawful detention charges - usually around a GBP2/3k out of court settlement. Either way there is still no legal requirement to give your name or address. In fact they will caution you and tell you you do not have to say anything (subject to blah blah)

If you commit an offence which is not arrestable, the officer will summons you to court, in which case you do have to give your details. If you dont, or the officer doesn't believe you, you are going down the police station until they can verify who you are.

Also, to be pedantic, you only have the right to know the officers collar number and station, not their name.

A little bit of law knowledge can be very useful sometimes.

Mine never was checked by police -and never gave a copy of my passport to management. What kind of place you live in that is checked weekly by police? sounds a bit scary, but it also sounds as a kind of exciting place.

How do you know? Stand in front of the reception 24 hours a day?

Also all hotels need to keep a register for police and immigration use. Most, probably not all, also make a copy of your passport upon signing in.

I live in a respectful place occupied by respectful people from respectful Asian countries like India, Sri Lanka, Phillipines and Africa. Go figure.

Because if it was I would have been arrested long ago. But lets please not go into the details here.

As per January 1st 2005 there's a ID carrying obligation in the Netherlands (for Dutch people also). Depending on situation it can be passport or drivers license.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Another reason not to go back! 555!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
It clearly explains that since June 1994, the Dutch people must detain an ID document...
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
I left August 1994. At that time there was talk about compulsary identification. But certainly not in place at that time...

Knowing that these sort of things in Holland take a very long time, the date January 2005 seems acceptable to me.

Hi, Doc!

I am a little bit surprised because the mentioned webpage http://www.senat.fr/lc/lc118/lc1185.html is an official information from the french senate. It explains that June 1st 2004 was the date of the coming into force of the law of December 9th 1993 relative to the obligation of identification in the Netherlands.

Perhaps this law wasn't strictly applied before, but I don't think that the french senate official website is wrong about this subject.

It won't be the first law in the world that is not well-known by the citizens nor applied by the law enforcing forces...

Some of the French still think Holland is part of the French empire.

LY & Doc,

The information mentioned above are about the law applied IN THE NETHERLANDS! Sometimes, french people don't speak only about themselves...

On the same website, it is also explained that the Danes do not have an ID card and don't need any ID document when they stay in Denmark, for example ( here: http://www.senat.fr/lc/lc118/lc1183.html ).

_________

Edit: Because LY can’t stop arguing, being aggressive and insulting against me (and my wife) and deforming the truth, I had to edit this post to include the following links:
