I doubt very much these statistics can be correct. Over a long 3 day "Holiday weekend" the nationwide highway death toll is, usually, around 500, plus. Over 3,000 people died on 9/11. Doesn't even come close to the point I think you were trying to make. More people die every year from mistakes made by their doctors and the hospitals than by accidental gun fire.

I'm afraid I don't understand your other points. I'm sure more people die on the road and die uneccesarily in hospitals than from accidental gun deaths. (As a smoker, I'll just conveniently forget about smoking-related deaths, if that's OK.) There are many, many causes of death in the US that seemingly no one cares or worries about. The point that I was trying to make (and you seem to be agreeing with me, but maybe not) was why such a fuss about the WTC deaths when there is no outcry over the deaths that could have been (more easily) prevented? Or, if you prefer, you should be more scared of a two year old with his dad's gun than of terrorists. Or a drunk behind the wheel...or a doctor in a hospital...or the building codes in Mass that allow so many houses to burn down every winter...or loads of other stuff...
PS I believe last time I checked US government stats the figures dated from 1997 (98, 99?) -- the last year stats were available for -- and were around 3,200 accidental gun deaths in chidren aged 16 or under. If you search through the gov sites you'll find them. Ignore the CDC figures -- there's a proviso on a gov site somewhere that says the CDC figures are wrong (I don't understand that either, BTW).
