Yep Bimmher it REALLY sucked,, est me.
At the main Police station I argued for hour after hour after hour, refused to sign the document because I could not read it ( written in Thai), asked for my Embassey to be contacted ETC ETC ETC. At about 5am some 3 hours after the incident,, the Policeman told my wife that he is part of special team and also work in police part of immigration and if I dont sign and pay "maybe I find it very difficult to get visa next time" f***!!!!!!! Imagine if I had actually done something wrong????????? At that point seeing future fun in Thailand disappearing I decided YES I sign NOW and yes here is your f***en 1,000 BHT,, now give me a reciept you prick ( thank god his English was not good enough to understand what I said but from the look on my face he had the general idea

Gee that sucks the big one!!

I took the photocopy advise several years back. Went to a color copy machine, tinkered around and fussed until I had a color perfect reduction of my passport that would fit in my wallet [Credit Card sized]. Took that copy, laminated it, trimmed it, and slipped it into the wallet where it waits still, for the next emergency to pop up.

Interesting idea you have there sounds good

Well I got pinged for dropping a cigi but outside the Landmark, the copper wanted to see my passport, I pulled out my Photo copy, he was cool with that, he then tried to slug me 2k for dropping the but.

He did ask me if I spoke Thai, I said I didnt, smiled ect, talked the fine down to 500 bht and I did ask him if the photo copy was ok, he said it was ok.

This was in last month.

Had the same thing happen to me and did the same thing talked them down to 500 baht.

Thin White Duke
The Nana makes a copy for you for free, when you check in to the "flea bag special".

Just like in Tijuana, see a cop, walk the other way.

Last time I was in Thailand (2 month ago) I had my girlfriend with me and she got her bag stolen the UNIQUE time she went out whitout me!
Inside the bag was her money and passport, so we had to go to Police Station to report the passport stolen (hoppefully with the help of the Thai girl that was with us this night, no policeman was speaking any english and most looked like Mafia peoples too!), the first thing they did was to ask for....a photocopy of the stolen passport
Luckyly we had this photocopy so it took only 1/2 h to make them fill the proper paper and out we go to the Embassy, there they asked first for....yes, you get it, the f***ing photocopy of the stolen passport (!!!), telling us that if we dont have it it will take up to 2 weeks to get the paperwork done so that my grilfriend can go out of Thailand.
After producing the photocopy the emabssy charged us 2000 bahts to do a paper that will allow my girlfriend to go back to France, but after giving us the paper they told us we now had to go to Immigration services to get a special stamp so that she can go OUT OF THAILAND!!! (incredible but true: whitout this stamps she could not go OUT of thailand, but could not stay either because she had no passport or visa, so the only place she could go was maybe Jail?)
We take taxi again and go to immigration service, what an incredible place! hundreds of peoples all waiting to get the same stamp, some peoples seemingly living in the immigration service since weeks...
We arrive, fill a first paper, wait, then go to the counter, then we are given a number, wait again, then our number get called, we go to the counter and...they ask for the photocopy of the stolen passport AGAIN and this time decide they will KEEP IT!!! I say no way I give this paper to you so they send me outside to have a photocopy of the photocopy done, I do it, go back, wait again and finnaly we have the damned stamp on the Embassy paper.

Total lost : 2000 bahts+150 bahts taxi+1/2 day

So guys, if you want to play safe make SURE to have a few copy of your passport somewhere safe, just in case you "loose" the original document, this will save you a LOT of time and money! (a photocopy is 2 bahts in Thailand...)
I had the friendly old tailor in my street in Pratunam to modify all my "thai jeans" by adding a special passport sized pocket INSIDE every of them, so I can carry my original passport all the time and dont have to worry about having it stolen. But still I have 2 copies of it in my room and one extra one with a girl I trust, "just in case"...

Wasted a lot of time arguing with them

Could this have been part of your problem?

Funny, I was thinking the same thing!

The funny thing is every time I go to Police station the police want to see my passport even if I have nothing do with anything. They just sit there and finger on it trying to find something wrong with it. money money money
