Seajohn,
Yes, my first encounter with short change was also in an outdoor seafood place a few years ago. I didn't follow up then like I should of and made the demands you did. Good for you and good for any of the members that take the time and make the effort to get their correct change and make these scumbags do the right thing. Remember if they think they can get away with it THEY WILL! You may not get your money back but make them work for every damn penny they steal from you. I think the best way to do it is to stand up, find the right place in front of the diners and loudly make your point like I did. I could tell it absolutely shocked the manager to see this. I am sure most diners would either not ask for their money or make only a small point of the issue. I chose to make a scene not once but twice in this restaurant.

And I also did make the point of telling the waitress it was a B1,000 when I put it in her plate, but she did not acknowledge that. Still not sure if the waitresses are in on it, but am sure the cashier and manager were.

This same incident happened to me at the Dollhouse on Soi Cowboy early last year. I had the same resopnse but no one caved. The regular manager was out that night, so I was SOL. Haven't returned since.

The response may have been uncomfortable, but I'm assuming you weren't there to make friends and just wanted to get your money back. You did so you should be happy. You may have lost face in the eyes of some of the customers, but who gives a crap.

What was the name of the restaurant, so I know not go to there?

I've patronized this airport Pub a few times, also can't recall the exact name, but without incident. Still, in the year and a half of living here, I have to say I've only been short-changed twice (Kings II in Patpong, and Gullivers on Soi 5), and I always check my bill carefully.
But I once watched a buddy of mine make a bartender count the day's cash register receipts after he was short changed, unintentionally.

Mr Nice Guy:
The issue wasn't the money as much as 1) They stole from me and, 2) they rubbed my nose in it by waving the B500 bill in my face, and saying with a scowl and aggressivness that I gave them B500 not B1,000. They money was minor part of the issue, but their attitude after they stole from me was the main issue. As for the part about me losing face with the other patrons, maybe, but not sure why I would. Wouldn't think that most would like someone sticking up for their rights and at the same time letting each of them know what was going on in their? The other thing, is that when I say I loudly addressed the other patrons about the scam, my voice was raised but only so I could be heard above the low background noise in the pub. I was not mad, nor was I yelling or anything like that. I was purposeful in my actions.

Bangkoksexydotcom:
How does signing the drink receipts help in not getting shortchanged? I knew the amount they charged me was correct, it was the change that was incorrect.

Mr Daddy
Sexy probably means the bill as in the note not the bar bill, if not, yeah, how does it help?
In Phuket over Christmas we got scammed badly at a ping pong show. They didn't even make the effort of saying we gave them 500's instead of 1000's, we got our change and it was missing random amounts. As soon as we mentioned the tourist police they gave us our cash back, me thinks they've been in trouble before. Still haven't experienced the 500/1000 trick though.

I always try to get small bills from the hotel before going out. However, when I am in a situation that I have to use a 'large denomination' bill to pay I always initial the corner of the bill in front of the waitress and tell her that it is my signature.

I did this in PI once and I saw the waitress arguing with the manager over the change he gave her. I suspect that she did not want to become the 'fall guy' for the manager's greed...

Brilliant - but take it one step further - initial ALL your bills when back at the hotel. Too easy for a waitress, once you have shown her how the bill is marked, to have staff make that bill disappear, and insist that you gace her 500. By not making it obvious, you then have a pretty good evidence for the tourist police, or if you confront a manager later.

China Sailer,
An excellent idea. I have just initialed all my B1,000 bills. When possible, I am now carrying B500 note as the highest, but when visiting ATM machine, initially I will start out with B1,000 and these will be initialed. I always learn something on this website.
