Quote: from bkkz on 11:49 am on Jan. 24, 2007 Apparently it is "tax free" money, since the tax is computed on the staff's tax tariff.
It is tax free indeed, but the customers pay the tax. See, it works like this : let's say you charge 10% service Charge and 7% Tax. a product that cost 100 thb before Tax and service should cost 117 thb. but as "Service Charge" is Taxable, the Client will pay 7% tax on the 10% service charge... which will make his taxes & service go to 17,7% instead of 17%. Customer will then pay 117.7thb ;)

Service charge........lolol. This is the biggest farce in the hotel/service industry. Nice way to hide the price increases so you can aford to pay the help. When you are at the top of the price range for your class of hotel, you can't raise the price, or you price yourself out of the market. Charge an extra 10% service charge, give 70% to the staff, the other 30% is just about enough to pay base wage. Nice model. I look at service charges as a business's way of saying we aren't the bargain we appear to be, if I was you I'd shop somewhere else. I've never seen anyone get the service charge back for bad service....lol. koolbreez

So, I book my stays via online brokers, that have lower prices, *AND* include service charges and taxes in their prices.

in the big hotels the "service charge" is a big portion of the salaries of waiters, maids etc. and the 10% are paid in full. as the doc said, no further tip required if the service charge and the VAT is added to your bill. rtb

Absolutely!! for an employee (maid for Example) for which the basic Salary is 7,000 THB per month, 10,000 THB in service Charge is equal to 130% increase in Salary many employees (the good ones) usually go to hotels that are very busy as they yield the highest Service charge payouts. It has also started to be common practice now (thanks to Accor, the bastards who started it) to Offer a GUARANTEED service charge. this means that no matter what the business levels are, the hotel guarantees a minimum service charge payout (usually around 4,000 thb)... only 3 hotels in Thailand were crazy enough to offer enormous Guarantees : Chivasom HuaHin = 10,000 thb Guaranteed Central Samui = 10,000 thb Guaranteed

CS, An interesting link at the bottom of the article as well, from the NY Times. We were just discussing this in the bar (in California) last night, as to the reasons why so many of the coed waitresses get so touch-feely with middle aged male customers, and why our egos let us ignore the obvious. Michael Lynn, an associate professor of consumer behavior and marketing at Cornell's School of Hotel Administration, has conducted dozens of studies of tipping and has concluded that consumers' assessments of the quality of service correlate weakly to the amount they tip. Rather, customers are likely to tip more in response to servers touching them lightly and crouching next to the table to make conversation than to how often their water glass is refilled - in other words, customers tip more when they like the server, not when the service is good. (Mr. Lynn's studies also indicate that male customers increase their tips for female servers while female customers increase their tips for male servers.)

Service charges, especially at big hotels, are pretty much standard practice throughout Asia, including Japan. I don't know why people are getting so excited about it now.

Isn't a bar fine a service charge with a variable percentage built in, depending on the final transaction price? Without the return to the 'server' of course, and the added cost of a 'server' tip at the end of business?
