the math is simple: have a baby when you are between 15 and 20 so when you are 30-40 they can take care of you.... the circle of life is about family unit taking care of each other as they get older.

I noticed the same phenomena on my first village visit to the Buriram area: "there is a whole age group missing now. It is really amazing to see only kids and middle age people and older there. No girls from around 17 to 30." The realization is subtle, but once you realize it, the impact is dramatic. The amazing thing is the girls are so devoted/hard wired (brain washed) in providing for their parents they risk their lifes/respect ("face") by becoming prostitutes. Yet, a lot abandon their own babies to the parents to make money in the P4P scene. The mothers only see their babies for brief periods. The grandparents raise the children. Yet the female offspring continue to show such devotion to the mother that did not raise her. The ironic thing is you talk to these same ladies and ask if the husband/father of her baby supports his child? The answer is invariably no. "He bad man".

Yes, one of the girls I regularly talk to, is so determined to provide for her whole family - when I ask her why her mama or papa don't work, she tells me she doesn't want them to work...she wants to provide everything. I did feel for her, when she told me today that her son of 1 year is just starting to walk properly....she is really missing him, and presumably her motherly instincts are kicking in - hat's off to these ladies...sometimes life can be tough... On another note, a couple of years ago I met a girl of 18, from a bar in Samui, and paid for her to leave the bar and then we flew together to BKK, where she went home to Surin. This was to get her out of the bar scene....however, now she is back working in Samui after her Thai b/f left her whilst she was pregnant...!

This I cannot believe. Surely Thai men would not leave their pregnant GF. If this is the case, the boyfriend would financially support her at least till the baby was 16 years old.

Nice one Barra, I agreeeeeeeee no Thai guy has EVER left his preggo g/f for a better looking, younger gal from a rich family Now back to this crud of the gals working to support the family and being "victims"...LOL. Are these the same gals I see walking around Sukumvit with 35,000 BHT phones ??? 5 Baht (weight measure) gold necklaces with matching bracelets..... I fail to see how those purchases are supporting their family. Get real, wake up.. as in most things this profession is based on pure simple GREED. I have no problem with this especially as its the basis of Capitalism, but don't give me the "She HAS to do it for her family crap". My wife managed to support her parents in Isaan without becoming a prostitute but then again she didn't have the latest model mobile or gold jewelery nor the latest fashion clothes.... simple choice. Regards Mel.

I think things are changing even for the night life girls these days. They aren't all supporting their "families" back in the province either. I talked with one MP girl who I had a casual relationship with and she related to me that a lot of the girls support their boyfriends and themselves first and foremost. Anything that is left over is then sent home. So, in the MP where she worked at least the vast majority of them were living the high life and sending back a paltry sum home for "face" reasons. She said she was one of the exceptions and I believe it because she lived a very frugal and austere lifestyle for a MP girl. So I don't buy that these girls are victims. They make a choice to work in the venues and many of them aren't really supporting the family at all. The worst cases are the ones who are involved in bad habits like alcoholism, partying, or drugs. This only ensures their eventual decline. I also wanted to add that a lot of them go heavily into debt to finance their new "hi so" lifestyle of 60,000+ baht a month. They end up getting a car, fancy condo/apt, and spend a lot on other stupid shit too without saving even a little for the future. Easy come easy go for most of them.

What is their 'logic' in supporting, completely, a boyfriend who contributes little or nothing, and most likely has a habit of having dumped girls before her (or her observing what happens to her girlfriends and their boyfriends) ? Rethorical question, of course.

The boyfriend is "emotional" support for them because they are insecure. He's usually an enormous asshole who treats them like shit because it validates their own insecurity. I know it doesn't make sense but that's the way some women are wired. They will get into abusive/parasitic relationships because being treated like shit reminds them of how lowly and dependent they are which in turn validates their own insecurity and need to cling onto this particular asshole. Because after all if he's an asshole to her he must be "better" somehow according to their logic. This is why the old saying "assholes get more chicks" is true sometimes. In Thailand it's even more complex because in my opinion a large number of men in this country are absolutely worthless and have close to zero earning potential. In turn the women are brought up to take care of the family and men in the household..so you see how that works out for the thai guys out there who want to take advantage of this system.

Oh no, makes perfect sense - in fact, it validates a crazy farang female friend of mine, who insists that 'women are all the same in Thailand and the West'. I guess she's right, just not for the reasons that she believes.
