Quote: from S M E G M A on 3:23 pm on April 16, 2008 Why the need for non-english words when there are english ones:
Because the loanword conserves the actual meaning so much better than the rather obscure word you dug up. As an odd aside, EPICARICACY is not listed either in dictionary.com, nor a straight-on wikipedia search - albeit the Mac OS X's integrated dictionary pulled it up right away (oddly, as a detailed wikipedia reference). Good find, but not really an accurate capture of the true Gestalt of Schadenfreude.

You are, of course, correct - they do need all the help we can give them, don't they

Quote: from seajohn on 12:16 pm on April 16, 2008 Thanks for asking (and answering) this kind of question, DaffyDuck. Like to see more of that, personally.
I've long held that philosophy of treating people well, and nicely; not being afraid of laughing at myself; that sometimes an extra $1 means more to the recipient, than to you paying it; that kindness, appropriately applied, comes back hundred fold (which may be why I probably have mostly good experiences when traveling, and/or interacting with Thai people). I do also wish that there would be more of that - but all we can do is apply it to our own lives first, and try to instill it in others second.
Quote: from seajohn on 12:16 pm on April 16, 2008 I was here worrying that you were on the verge of becoming a total Schadenfreude addict!
Schadenfreude is not a broad brush to be painted with - you can only gain maximum enjoyment from it when it is directed properly -- mostly to those that deserve their misfortune as it was brought on through their own machinations.

I would say.... Som Nam Na (Serves him right). 'Na Song Saan' would mean you feel bad for someone, while Schadenfreude contains joy...

You do see most petty criminals out on the roads here in Thailand paritcularly from the late middle to the end of the month, though not during the hottest parts of the day, stopping traffic of all sorts and inviting them to gain merit with the Buddha by parting with a small donation. Apart from it being part of their training, I'm also told it's called transparency and that only certain selected sections of them resort to breaking and entering, extortion, GBH and other much more serious crimes when the drug-money flow and kick-back is getting low. As for anyone who isn't Thai, either behaving in an awkward, rude or obstreperous way, let alone outside of the law, I would suggest that they have an unhealthy sub-conscious desire to be incarcerated but that what they would find in that state here, would be beyond their wildest nightmares.
