About 18 months ago, the TG i've lived with for the last 4 years brought up the subject of marriage and sin sot one night while we were out having dinner.
She suggested 250,000 Baht.

At that point she changed the subject, never to be mentioned ever again. The hardest part was doing the mental maths.

Sadly that is changing fast. Now you can get an income tax refund even though you had no income and paid no income tax. If you live in New Orleans you can get a free house. If you buy a new house now the government will give you 8k and soon 4500 for dragging your clunker to a delaership. With this mentality of "the government" will take care of you shit.
My wife got 100k for the sin sot. Her parents paid for the wedding and I discreetly gave them the 100k after the wedding. It was not flashed around as my wife did not want that or a big wedding. We did not get married until after she came to America and we were married. During that time our daughter was born as well. My wife has sent some small amounts home to help during the rough times but resists the calls for money by just not calling for a couple of weeks if she gets mad. I'm lucky in that my in-laws do not drink or smoke. Her mom is quite the business person with rai after rai of rubber tree, rice fields...etc. Her father is 27 year Thai Military and will retire soon. Her brother just graduated from Thai officers school as a doctor and her sister starts University in Surin in July. All in all they are kick ass people and I'm very lucky. Certainly NOT the norm.
We will have a house somewhere in Thailand at some point but it may or may not be near the in-laws. I like my privacy and not having 15 people from the village popping by every day to sit on my porch or wander through my house all day. Just not what I'm looking for in my retirement years.
Anyone who lives in America and builds a house in Thailand for a 2-3 week visit every year is nuts. I wonder if that house will be standing in 25 years? I get 9 weeks of vacation a year and even that is not enough of an incentive for me to want a house in Thailand. My wife has even stated several times she has no desire to EVER live in Thailand again. I'm sure she would like a house tho. WTF.
