If you think that it is bad in Thailand, you should try driving a motorcycle in Nepal: only for serious thrillseekers.
BTW, I agree with PR on people's different perception here if arriving in a taxi or in a car. But again, for tourists staying here only for a few days, probably better off not renting a car.

Bangkok: I have lived here a long time and do not drive here nor own a car. IMHO the taxis are so cheap and can be called to the door by phone for 20 bht over meter rate, why drive?
Until such time as I can afford a pro driver full time, my wife and I will continue to patronize the radio meter taxis. As we use them a lot and have for years they give us very good fast service. The meter plus 20 baht. Expressway tolls extra.
No petrol, diesel or LPG fuels.
No maintenance
No insurance
No liability!!!
If the thing breaks down en route we call another one and we're off.
No outrageous highly taxed capital cost for vehicle.
If I want ego boost I ride around in my friend's Benz 600 SEL.
But cars are not and have never been my thing.

What if I bring my Monster 4WD over and do some traffic clearing sevice for everybody. I'll ride point, for lets say, 2bhat per meter. That should be good enough and i'll latch on to someone and clear you a parking spot. That will cost extra though lol!!!
