Speaking as a chemist...
There is no way to "detoxify" mercury. As an element, it is immutable (except by a nuclear process and then it isn't mercury anymore, but it probably is radioactive as all hell). It is a cumulative heavy metal toxin which is particularly destructive to the central nervous system.
All compounds of mercury are very toxic as well. Salts as well as organomercury compunds, all nasty.

Madfrog......my comment about hats was referring to "mad" hatters. Hatmakers used to use mercury in their work, and it invariably fried their brains just from being around it too long......ever hear the expression "mad as a hatter"?

Madfrog, on a "heavier" note, stop all this wandering. Let the path come to you, and simply focus on the fundamentals of you spiritual endevours, and avoid the charlatans and quick fixers. Learn to cease the desire, and the answers will arrive. Maybe not when "you" want them to, but certainly in time. Maybe not "your" time, but "over" time. JMHO.

About Tibetan pills made with "detoxified"quicksilver (yes i know hard to believe on a chemical point of view,i was myself more than sceptic..) please try a search on any search engine under the tibetan name "RINCHEN"
Or alternatively contact the
Tibetan Medical Institute , Gangchen Kyishong DHARAMSALA -176215 Kangra District (HP) India
There are there some Doctors of the Tibetan Tradittin that are making those Pills and prescribing them to peoples since approx 40 years (the tradition about those pills can be trace back to 2500 years ago...still no case of death by poisoning after all this time )

Juergen Aschof, a neurology specialist at Ulm, Germany has studied quite extensively the use of jewel pills, including mercury in tibetan medicine. He has published a book about it a couple of years ago. It's called "Tibetan 'Precious Pills' - The Rinchen Medicine. A Tantric Healing System with Great Benefits Some Problems ".

BTW, I am not sure that tibetans would take rinchen pills on a regular base "just to stay healthy"... this is used for problems perceived as very serious and the process of taking one (a rather complicated affair) is seen as a spiritual as much as physical remedy.

Forgot to add... I have been myself treated by tibetan medicine. I was reluctant, but I was rather sick and where I was, there was no alternative. This was no jewel pills, but it included several other pills, taken in specific conditions (some in the dark for example) and acompanied by prayers. The results were satisfactory ( I was "cured" ), and there were also some interestign side-effects...

I must admit that i am VERY impressed by your posts...the link you gave is full of info that are new to me..
About the process of taking those "Rinchen" pills, yes ,its rather complicated and does not seem to make sense from a western point of view...(things about lunar aspects, not taking some kinds of foods during the days that follow, etc etc...) but for what i know of it they do work.
About taking them to stay healthy, i had this advice given by a tibetan doctor and i am taking one "Rinchen Drangjor rilnag chemo" every 2 month and a "rinchen mangjor chemo" during the month in between ..the purpose of them is a "purification of the body&mind"...i must say that i havent seen any doctors since i started taking them ,i have a very active life regarding all aspect of it so i am let say "satisfied" with this....(no intoxication so far)

Well, taking a pill containing Hg or an Hg compound (if any is indeed present) might be okay in combination with another pill as you say...if the other pill is BAL (British Anti Lewisite) which flushes heavy metals out of the body.
A century or more ago Western medicine was still using mercuric chloride, "calomel" to treat gonorrhea by introducing this toxic and corrosive compound into the urethra. VERY painful. Also used less succesfully against syphilis.
Then along came Dr Ehrlich with Salvarsan, an organo-arsenic compound, which killed spirochetes slightly faster than it did patients, if the dosage was managed properly.
Today neither medicine containing toxic heavy metals is used, neither the sledgehammer of HgCl2 nor the "magic bullet" from Germany. We call that progress.
The first part of the Oath of Hippocrates states "First, do no harm."
Personally, were I in Nepal, or Tibet, or Bhutan for that matter, I'd do my best not to get sick.
