Just to give an update on this story...
I saw this guy again Monday, on Sukhumvit around Soi 8. He said he works in one of the buildings there, and saw me out the window. He not only remembered me, but also where I was from. Asked me how long I would be in town, and then, amazingly, invited me over to his place again! I don't believe this.
I said I had to go meet someone.

My experience was Part A to the tee. Middle aged guy sidles up as I'm strolling down the Soi. Where you from, oh my neice is there now, studying, tell me more.
Come to this place with me, my brother will like to talk to you more of America, you can meet my neice when you get back.
Part B is the "gem". Uncle sells precious stones, you can look and choose, he make ring for you, braclet, necklace whatever. Good Price.

What about the survey girls outside of good hotels, (just a few questions please sir. ) What hotel are you staying at? The 9 am phone call announce "'guess what you have won"" Then the car over to the place that has 50 other (mulitable winners).......a share property scam!.. I asked the uni student if I could pay her for a survey of my own next day> She said no to the first two offers. But not the third. She is the one with pig tails outside the landmark on saturdays, and will do short time (anal too and facials ) for about 1500 baht. Real uni student.

I had a similiar experience that TWD had in the park across the street form Grand Palace. Middle aged Thai well dressed man. Approached me asked me were I was from. Then said he had degree from San Degio State and MBA from Cal Berkely. Trying to make a connection. Any way it was the gem scam, some once a year Kings sale.
If you had taken the money from the daughter and lost it, I don't think they would have been too nice to you. They may have fitted you with some cement shoes.

That is why I never answer. I just keep going saying that I am busy. The few times I have answered where I am from and they come with the usual answer, I just smile and say sorry, that I was kidding and that I am not from there but from somewhere else, smile and keep going. Or else just tell them a very remote place where no chance on earth their sisters could be: Andorra or Zimbawe; after all, why would it be relevant to a total stranger where you REALLY are from.
I hate dealing with people that start conversations by asking questions -unless it is someone from accross a counter.

intresting this scam is still going
there are a certain amount of scams that have been running for years in thailand
and new ones being imported from abroad maybe BK can start a FAQ section on common scams that are about for the newbies and to keep the members informed
theres the gem scam
gambling scam god knows how many africans running round trying gem and currency scams
time share seems popular at the moment but that not realy a scam
etc etc
heres my no 1 tip for the melee around tourist spots where scammers work
1) wear dark sunglasses so you can avoid eye contact walking down the road (added plus you can oggle the cuties as well)
2) use a walkman with big headphones
these two simple actions usally stops 90% of people who want to start a conversation and you can ignore people totally will little embarisment
it works for me as I walk down the suk people infront of me get hassled but I see most these people dont even try to attract my attention
