hzink, If you say that there is counterfeit Polo, Nike, etc stuff out there for 150 baht, I believe you. I am just saying that at least some of the stuff, especially on Sukhumvit, is real (whatever that means). I have never seen real Polo or Nike for 150 baht on Sukhumvit, so it is quite reasonable that we are both correct. The stuff I have seen on Sukhumvit has an asking price of about 500 baht, but can be had for about 300 if you negotiate and buy a few a once. The stuff I am talking about is never hidden, even during police raids (which I witnessed on Sukhumvit one evening in late August). There is very little (if any) difference in quality between the Polo, Nike, and other decent brands. I buy discontinued and overrun Polo, Nike, etc, from discount stores in the US all the time for about $10-$15 (Marshallís, TJ Maxx, Ross) and these are definitely not counterfeit either.

hzink You must be better informed than I am. I dont know of any major brand that actully make the stuff in europe, never mind france. The major clothing brands get everything made in China, via agents in HK, Sri Lanka and even the U.A.E.

Regarding APECs general influence on the go-go/bar scene, the following is an interesting excerpt from the Asiabugle October 29th. 2003: Scuttlebutt "APEC is all over bar the shouting. And there may be a bit of that, when a certain fact gets known. Talking to the various bar owners it seems the bars with local customers did okay, however bars that rely on visitors did particularly badly, which meant as a generalization that Patpong was very quiet, Nana Plaza quiet (with the Crown Group doing virtually nothing), but Angelwitch and Playschool etc. doing okay and Cowboy was sort of all right. However owners were surprised that virtually no APEC delegates, or associated personnel, were in the bars. Two Aussie ships were in port and the crews normally end up in Patpong, but no, they stayed away. The answer lies in a Thai government memorandum to all embassies, concerning visiting personnel. The memo states that foreign troops are advised against using Patpong, Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy, as the government could not guarantee their safety, however Soi 33 was considered safe. Whilst most embassies knew this to be rubbish they had no alternative but to warn people off. I just wonder if that directive is still current. In which case why does the Thai government not warn all tourists off? And if these three areas are unsafe: what makes the rest of Thailand safe?"

My point, which is why a shirt proclaiming to be 'made in france', sold on Sukhumwit, or Patpong for 150 Baht (okay, 250-500 Baht Farang price), is most certainly NOT genuine. Great deal for th seller, though, if they find a farang willing to pay 500 Baht for it. Harry

You must have bee out of the loop over the previous few weeks - these areas (as well as several hotels) were on the JI (Asian Al Quaeda Clowns') hit list, and as such were deemed risky. The last thing Thailand wants is a bunch of delegates blown up. Soi 33 is deemed to obscure for most islamic terrorists to know about (it requires having some cultural eduction, and being able to read) Interesting tidbit - saw far more muslim in BKK this time around. hzink, Your critique is well taken - meant I'm sure for the author of the Asiabugle article. My posting is only a quote, of an article which I too agree is flawed in places, but interesting nonetheless I thought because it credits the scarcity of APEC crews in entertainment areas largely as a result of Thai government warnings to Embassies and Embassy warnings in turn to their constituents.

Not only that, but many goods labelled 'Made in the USA' are manufactured in the Pacific Island of Saipan, which as part of the US Commonwealth, allows the goods from their sweatshops to be labelled in this way. RO

Interesting loophole, and I wasn't aware of that. Ah, yes, capitalism at its very best - finding new ways to be truthful AND exploit poor countries. Harry

Uh, no. Saipan and the rest of the Northern Marianas have been a Commonwealth Territory of the United States since '47. So unless the "poor country" you are referring to is the USA, no dice. And nobody is exploited. The garment industry workers are almost exclusively foreign guest workers -- Filipinos mostly and other Asians and Pacific Islanders -- and while they don't make the US federal minimum wage, they do make a bit more than is paid for equivalent work in their home countries.

First, a disclaimer: You raised a good point, and I am not suggesting the below, but for a more rounded perspective, and maybe healthy debate - more appropriately over a beer - or two: 1) Would it be better for the poor countries to have the 'capitalists' pull out their 'exploitive' manufacturing outlets? 2) Or pay the same rate as paid at home, because anything less would still be exploitive, if only less so? 3) If they pay the same rate then where is the incentive to manufacture in poor countries? İ(So go to #1). And last: 4) Are we ourselves not guilty of "exploiting' poor countries by similarly paying so much less for their goods and services than we would at home - open competition in a free market? We have the same opportunity every day to pay more for goods and services as do manufacturers - if we so choose. İCannot hold manufacturers to different ethics than consumers. İSame humans, same principle. There are other alternatives to dirty 'capitalism' - one notable is called communism. İLook at alll the good that it did for the Soviet workers - and their so-called products. İAnd China has a little secret it doesn't want its workers to know about - capitalism in tiny Taiwan - kicking its butt economically. There are no easy solutions, but simply blaming it on capitalism is not one of them.
