Tyler Durdin, the Pats are the best team this year, I'll give you that, but one of the greatest teams of all time, you're having serious delusions of grandeur.

They're offense, quite frankly, is mediocre at best. Their best rusher, Antwain Smith, ran only for 642 yds for the entire season.

The Patriots are 6th in scoring offense and 15th in rushing offense. You're beloved Tom Brady is the 21st rated QB in the NFL with an 85.9 QB rating. With 32 teams in the NFL he's in the bottom tier! I don't think anyone is foolish enough to elevate him to Montana status anytime soon.

They do have a good rushing defense but the secondary is suspect. They are probably the least popular 2x Superbowl Champions ever. Unfortunately for the Pats, though, everyone seems to be talking about Janet Jackson's nipple and not the game. Like I said, wait until another Superbowl win or 2 and then your statement may have more substance.

That said, they deserve congradulations. It was one helluva game, better than the Tenessee/St Louis game a few years back. And I do admire the lack of egos and team outlook they seem to project. Anyhow, I'm a Falcons fan so what do I know? Maybe one day we can debate the finer points of the great NFL teams over a beer or two.

The Patriots are not a dominant team, as the greatest teams were for their time, but the Patriots play smart and find a way to win. Their coach deserves credit for instilling a winning attitude, and maintaining continuity with salary cap restrictions.

But the Green Bay Packers are more exciting than Janet Jackson's nipple. NEXT YEAR!!!

Have to agree with that one. And who was the great teacher of those players and where is he now. Mike has almost all the pieces in place now and his young team will really have something to show in the next couple of years. Seattle went home with their heads held high because they played a hell of a game against a great team. Seattle's downfall was one play, Green Bay gambled and won.

This Pats team will continue to not get any respect, why? Because there are no Superstars on the team. You ask anyone about the greater teams of yesteryear and the names Mean Joe Greene, Montana, Art Monk, Aikman, Emmitt Smith, etc come up. So, there are no superstars on the Pats, Brady, Ty Law, Vinateri and Seymour are as close as we can get. Does that mean they are not a good team? Heck no, they are just that, a great team, not a great bunch of individuals, and football is the consumate team sport (just ask the Colts or the Dolphins who have the talent but dont play great as a team). Overall though, you cant argue the results, 2 Lombardi trophies does all the talking, so they must be doing something right. Like Bill Parcells said "a win is a win is a win", the Pats have won their 2 SBs by a margin of 6 points, does that mean they dont deserve it? Factor in how they got to the win (15 in a row, injuries, etc) and that is a great team.

Yes, their offense is mediocre but look who Brady has to work with, at least Montana had Craig, Rice and Rathman. Brady still gets it done with little or no help. A.Smith rushed for 642 but K.Faulk also rushed for 638 (neither cares that they didnt get a 1000 because they both now have 2 rings each). Are you saying if 2 players rush for 1200+ it isnt the same as 1 stud rushing for 1200? How does that make sense?

The Pats may not be #1 in every category and neither is Brady, but where were the #1s in each category during the SB? Watching the games on the couch, that's where. Were the Steelers, Skins, Niners and Cowboys #1 in every category during their runs? No, but they won and thats all anyone cares about. In fact during the Bills 4 times to the Big Dance, they were #1 or close to it in a lot of categories, yet who talks about them being a dynasty? No one, because they couldnt win the SB, and thats all that matters. If the dynasties you talk about didnt win SBs would we call them the same, I dont think so. Winning SBs is what counts and the Patriots have 2 of them in 3 yrs, that means they are either really good or really lucky.

Are the so called "experts" foolish for comparing Brady with Montana too? Almost all the experts are saying that, just turn on any Sportscenters and you will be inundated with Montana/Brady comparisons. Are Bill Walsh and Joe Montana themselves foolish for saying that Tom Brady is as close to Montana as we are going to see? If you wont listen to them, look at the stats, Montana had 4 Rings and 3 SB MVPs by the time he retired at 40. Brady has 2 Rings and 2 SB MVPs at age 26. Its hard to know if Brady will win another one but those stats are Montana-like already. Again, Brady may have a low QB rating but he drove the Patriots to win 2 SBs, thats all I care about and I am sure the "best" QBs in the league (Manning and McNair) would glady give up their ratings of 100 and 99% for just one ring. Look at Dan Marino, the most prolific passer of all time, but what does everyone say about him? "...Yeah but he never won a SuperBowl".

The Patriots D wasnt #1 in the league, Dallas was #2 and Buffalo was #1 (Patriots shredded Buffalo for 31 points in the last game and shut out the Cowboys). The Patriots had a NFL High 29 Ints (5 more in Playoffs), thats pretty good for a "suspect" secondary.

You're saying the Pats have to win another 2 (4 total) to be considered a great team? That' s a tough crowd to please.

Like CG told me, you can make stats into anything you want, the only thing I care about is SB wins and the Patriots have those now.

You can see I am a Pats fan but also a NFL fan. I would love to sit down over a few beers to discuss. And if it makes you feel better, when Tom Brady heard that Jake Delhomme said he aspires to be like Brady, he said "Why would you want to be like a QB who can't run and has an average arm? I want to be like Michael Vick!!!"

Cheers

ps - for the sake of just about everyone else on the board, if you want to discuss further, maybe we should do it through PMs and emails?

TD, if you read my post I did say they were the best team this year, at least by 3 points with 8 seconds left against a heavily unfavored Carolina team with much less talent than the Pats.

Don't get blinded by your love of the Pats and do injustice to Marino, Montana and the likes by comparing them to the 21st ranked QB.

Remember TD that Jim Plunkett won 2 Super Bowls and he was being compared to the greatest. Where is he now? Don't get too excited about Brady yet.

ps- that's all I'll say on the topic, it's all good. Just don't forget Plunkett. BTW, you're in Hawaii man, what the hell do you care about the Patriots for? Did you grow up in Boston? At least they have an excuse. 555

In the end, QB rankings come down to this...Can they win?

I am a Cowboy fan and would happily accept Brady as our quarterback, over Michael Vick, if the truth were known.

Vick is a fantastic athlete, has great feet and a great arm but WHAT HAS HE WON?

Give me a winner any day.

I think the point was missed. History has yet to be written on Brady. He is a young quarterback. We will see what the next 8 -10 seasons bring and then we will know which catagory he will fall into.

Aircrest:

I readily agree that Brady is fairly early in his career. Let me make another point in his favor.

Of those starting quarterbacks in a Super Bowl that have won more than one game and not lost any, the list looks like this:

Terry Bradshaw - 4-0
Joe Montana - 4-0
Troy Aikman - 3-0
Bart Starr - 2-0
Tom Brady - 2-0

At 26 years of age, Brady is the youngest to have reached this goal. I would say he is in pretty good company right now.

I would still prefer a leader and winner over a superb athlete at the QB position any day.

Look for the likes of Peyton Manning and Tom Brady to be the next rivals such as we had with Elway, Marino, Montana, Testeverde.

Bottom line comes down to winning. If a guy can get his team to believe in him, he can be the worst QB in the world and the team will rally behind him and help execute the win.

One man a team does not make. Right now I think Brady has his team believing that when he is in the game, they can't lose. That's all he needs.

More than likely he would struggle with another team, but this one believes in him. And thus, we have the making of a good young leader (and a QB).
