Greatest team ever is the 49ers?.. Who has been smoking the rock? If you want to talk about championships you gotta say The Packers, if you want to talk about Home Field Advantage youhave to say Lambo, if you want to talk about fan participation you have to say Green Bay... That all adds up to one thing... The Packers are the GREATEST TEAM EVER! besides... the fans own the team.

9er's are a bunch of limpwristed b*tch boys... they are almost as bad as the french!

They've won 3, but if the Super Bowl began in 1961 instead of 1968, they would have 6. And there were 7 more before the AFL started. So what's your point? 'Super Bowl' is marketing, but remember the prize is called the 'Lombardi Trophy'.

Mr. Nado:

Now you have done it. You have unleashed the dogs of war and they are I...

Let's examine the record a little.

You say if the Super Bowl began in 1961 they would have 6 trophies. My answer to that is...if a frog had wings, he wouldn't bump his ass! The simple truth is that the Super Bowl did begin following the 1966 season (not 1968 as you claim) with the game being played on 1/15/67.

Since you claim there were seven more before the AFL started. Seven more WHAT's? NFL Championships I will assume you are talking about.

You are correct in that Green Bay has won a total of 7 NFL championships from 1931 through 1965. So have the Chicago Bears, by the way, with the Cleveland Browns winners of five more. GB has won 3 Super Bowls. The total is 7 NFC championships prior to the start of the Super Bowl and 3 Super Bowls, for a total of 10 and not 13 as your post states.

Now let's look at the Super Bowl. Green Bay has 3 wins in 4 games played. I think we agree on that. Pittsburgh has played in 4 and won 4. San Francisco has played in 5 and won 5. Dallas has played in 8 (twice as many as GB), winning 5 of them. See my point here?

You mention the Super Bowl trophy being named after Vince Lombardi. He was a great coach, 9 years in Green Bay and 1 at Washington...overall record of 105-35-6 for the best winning percentage of all coaches.

Let me throw another fairly decent coach at you here. Yup...you guessed it. Tom Landry. He coached 29 years with a record of 270-178-6 with an expansion team. He had an NFL record 20 consecutive winning seasons from 1966 through 1985, winning 13 NFC East championships, 5 NFC championships and 2 Super Bowls.

Maybe the trophy was named for Lombardi because Landry was still alive.

The Super Bowl may be all about marketing but I don't think you will find anybody that doesn't consider it the world championship of American football.

Whew...so there!

I stand corrected, it's actually 12 NFL Championships for the Packers:'29,'30,'31,'36,'39.'44,'61,'62,'65,'66,'67 and '96.

Landry took over an expansion team, but Lombardi inherited a team with only one victory the previous season. In his second year, the Packers lost a close game to the Eagles for the NFL Championship. It was the only playoff game Lombardi ever lost.

Lombardi and Landry coached together, Landry was Defensive Coordinator of the Giants when Lombardi was Offensive Coordinator. There was intense rivalry between the two, but never any sign of animosity.

In head-to-head, Lombardi came out on top.

Greetings:

Great stuf in this thread. I'm gonna side-step though the discussion around the "best" NFL team of all time.

Someone asked about the Cowboys. THe deal for Keyshawn is done, all they have to do is compensate Tampa, which does NOT include Galloway. Looks like they will be releasing Galloway after the June 1st deadline so that they won't take the full cap hit.

Garcia will be visiting ValleyRanch and maybe will give Carter a run at the starting position.

As for the RB position, Duce Staley and Dillion look like prime candidates for the job. ONe things for certain, Hambrick proved he's NOT "da man'!! ha ha ha ha!!

Back to T.O. He's a raven for now and I think he will be in the end, but it looks like he might be fliing some grievance against the 9ers.

Now, what' s the scoop with Seatlle now wanting to pay Springs and then opening the "Mint" to Grant Winstrom?? He's getting top offensive lineman money!! Talk about throwing too much money around.

Now, pls carry on the discussion over the best ever football team. ha ha ha!!

ABC:

Is this the Garcia from SF? I would be happy with him...sh_t, I'd be happy with anybody that can lead the team.

Keyshawn and Deuce both maybe signing with Dallas? That will be interesting.

Mr. Nado:

Lombardi should have lost the Ice Bowl. Kramer jumped early on his block, which got Starr the touchdown.

I am not presumptious enough to say Dallas has the greatest team or franchise of all time. I am, however, presumptious enough to say GB does NOT have the greatest team of all time. Their record of winning championships, since they threw away leather helmets, simply does not support it.

Super Bowls in the modern era are the measuring stick. And since we have been playing SB's since 1967, that's a lot of recent history. Looking at the SB exclusively seems to get back to Dallas being the best franchise in my humble opinion. Reasoning?

Pittsburgh was 4-1 but 4-0 during Bradshaw's career, nothing won before or after.

SF is 5-0, winning their first game in SB XVI (1982) and their last in SB XXIX (1995).

Green Bay won SB's I and II and then nothing until XXXI, a non-winning gap of XXIX games.

Dallas, on the other hand won SB's VI (1972), XII (1978), XXVII (1993), XXVII (1994) and XXX (1996). In addition, Dallas played in and lost SB's V (1971), X (1976) and XIII (1979).

Simply put, in the Super Bowl era, Dallas has the most impressive long-term record.

As far as fans go, Philadelphia has the meanest (once allegedly booing the National Anthem) and SF has the weirdest (well, what do you expect?).

Now, the greatest single team? I dunno...Miami's undefeated one?

No, I don't think you can ignore most NFL history just because some marketing guy coined the phrase 'Super Bowl', particulary the few years before SB I. The greatest team? The 1962 Packers, I think. Outscored their opponents 415-148, while going 13-1. The only loss was a miracle game in Detroit on Thanksgiving. Beat the NY Giants, in New York, for the title. Miami may have been undefeated, but didn't have to play in Detroit on Thanksgiving, and didn't have competition like Johnny Unitas' Colts and Jim Brown's Browns.

Greatest NFL Franchise? Probably more agreement on that: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/sportsnation/franchiseRanks?sport=nfl&year=2004

What about the Chicago Bears of 85. They went 15-1 during the regular season and then won all 3 post season games to win the superbowl crushing New England 46-10. That 36 defense rushed over the opposing QB as at tsunami.

A Sports Illustrated online poll puts the CB second to the 1972 Miami Dolphins as the greates team ever.

I do not know really much about the other teams through history besides what the common Joe would know. But I know a little about the CB 85 because I was living in Chicago at the time, and the atmosphere during the season was fantastic. the whole city was mesmerized by the Bears that year.
