How about having the money but not being willing to have the f*cking "new mobile phone" (i hate mobile phones), the bright new (but very uncomfortable) suit with the silk necktie and also refusing to cut your hairs and beard? I have the money, no problem about that, but I stick to my (clean) jeans&tee-shirts, and I can tell you that its not only with Thai that I can notice the "class system" at work, even at the only BKK-Tonight round table I ever attended I could see it very clearly, but I dont give a f*ck about it, if people dont like my look/origin/whatever, then they are some more peoples to ignore thats all.. Hzink: I guess you are right about your observations and way of seing things, simply I dont have time&energy to spoil playing dumb games...I ll be anyway happy to have a few beers with you one day because you seem to be an interesting person Madfrog

Quote: from koolbreez on 3:37 pm on July 21, 2004 Money is always the way out of any class in any country. The biggest problem is that once you have moved up in class with money, every legal, and some illegal, effort will be made to take that money away from you. If your family survives in the new class for a few generations, then your family might be finally accepted in that class. Just my observations.
And a very fine observation too. If you looked at the top of Thai society where the old moneyed Thai families reside you will see some real social climbing with money. Gen. C (who may or may not have headed a Thai special operations unit in 1993) may have made a few bob in an errrr shipping business specialising in heavy machinery. (That is all I am prepared to infer from the Bangkok Post) He is sat on US$40 million and would dearly love to be part of the clique of rich established families that really run Thailand. But he is doomed as firstly he is a peasant and secondly he has no son and heir to marry into one of those families. And would Toxin be let in? Unfortunately he may though his Chinatown roots will always be a hindrance.

Racism is also prevalent in all countries and races. Except the trendy chattering classes wont accept this. They don't see black vs. black just black vs. white. I would imagine there is also racism amongst the various Asian countries as well.

Unfortunately if you spend too long in Thailand you start to think like them.

No doubt about it HL, it exists everywhere. For some reason the human condition is not to like that which is different, to affirm your own comfortable position by diliking those who are not the same. As to Toxin being the same, he is no more ethnic Thai than my grandson (if I had one) as his grandaddy came from China. Being born and raised here does not count to real Thais.

Historically high society in Thailand was dominated by technocrats - the people who ran the state agencies, diplomats etc.. But over the last 30 years, money has beome more important and big business families have become a lot more respectable and moved up. 2 generations ago, the Sophanpanichs were money launderers - now they run the biggest bank. The family behind Bank of Asia originally made their money owning massage parlors on Phetburi Rd. Mind you it is the same in the UK. Just you watch - they will probably give Roman Abromavich a knighthood within 10 years while all his co-conspirators are either dead or rotting in Russian gulags.

Good points Abrak. My take on it all is that slavery and a feudalist society will deliver an elite who hold the reins of power and are better educated, better fed and hold a higher status than those they control. The slaves have to look up from their lowly position that they are trained from birth to accept. Move forward 100 years and you have modern Thailand

One of my favourite philosopher, Gian Battista Vico, once said that "History repeats itself...names may change, places may change, dates may change, but the facts never change". From the ancient Greeks to the modern Americans, nations and civilizations have always been based on hierarchies where the best educated and richer people are in control and the lower classes have to struggle to survive and only few get to reach the higher levels..... If for many thousands of years things have been going in this way, perhaps this is the way things should keep going.....
