Mark. 'And a friend of mine was arrested for 'drinking without a passport' and spent the night in a cell. He now carries a photocopy of his passport at all times' don't confuse me please,it does'nt take much. was the above statement about Thailand or the UK? i would find that hard to believe in the UK.

while the FR goverment might require that NL folks carry ID in FR, the NL person will produce a passport as his ID, because they do not have ID cards at least not yet this is the point I was making before
As a matter of fact we do have id-cards for many years here in Holland. And it's true that by law you should be able to produce a legal document stating your identity. For some purposes a drivers license is usualy accepted, but passport or id-card are the only legitimate documents. It is however not enforced widely, and I don't think you will get into much trouble for just not carrying it with you.

It was in Thailand...there's no requirement to carry ID in the UK (when drinking anyway )

what are your thoughts on a ID Card in the UK? i have no problem with it and think all this 'infringement of civil liberties' is pure crap. a card which acts as a driving licence/passport with social security details/medical details etc would be a good idea in my book. why are people so scared of them? the only problem I see would be the cost....

I carry my passport with me pretty much all of the time when abroad and don't give it a second thought. It's too difficult getting a drink in many places in the US without ID, however old you look, and it's a requirement in most foreign countries anyway. I've never been asked for it in Thailand (or anywhere else I can think of offhand) and I suppose now I'm living here I'll probably finally get around to photocopying it and carrying that instead (it's not worth the one in a million chance of having to spend the night in a Thai prison cell). But at home many people refuse to carry ID (including me). No idea why. Part of the English mentality? I don't think people are scared of them (ID cards), but certainly object to the cost (which given the way things are now done in the UK, would be exorbitant). They provide no added security benefits (there are tens of web sites explaining why, I'm not going to argue the case). One big problem would certainly be the number of police officers who would see it as an excuse to stop just about anybody and everybody (which would be an issue and would be an infringement of civil liberties). I really can't see the benefits that ID cards would confer on the population at large. I've never needed a driving licence, I don't need a passport at home, I can remember my National Insurance number (and cheap plastic cards are available for those who can't) and my doctor has all my medical records (and if you have a medical condition you can wear one of those Medical Alert thingies).

As a frequent visitor to LOS, I receive regular email updates from the British Foreign Office travel advisory service. I have noticed that the last few emails have clearly stated that original passport (not photocopy) must be carried at all times in Thailand.

Could well be, because one year before I was in a taxi with some girls, and then the police hold us up, asked all the woman their ID cards, and I gave them a copy of my passport, then this was sufficient. Last month me and my TG went to CM2, they asked her ID, and they asked me my passport. (never carry my original passport only a copy) but this time I didn't had any ID with me so after some talks I could come in. The reason that I just liked to visit Thailand was that the nightlife was a real nightlife till sunset, but now this has changed dramatically.
