Quote: from Cennn3 on 4:30 pm on Aug. 2, 2005 The reason people are being killed in Iraq is because the USA has charged into another country that has nothing to do with them for oil. (...) The last just war the USA was involved in was the WW11 when they were actually bombed on their own soil, which is also debatable as that was Hawaii which they also invaded.
Maybe you should stock up on general information and actually know what you are talking about, before you start spouting amusing anecdotes and stories.

Cennn3, Gotta agree with the duck. You need to check your facts. Invasion means the moving of troops to take over a country by military force. Hawaii did not have any troops involved in the removal of the Hawaiian Royal Family, they were ousted by a group of Missionaries backed by Local Businessmen. This was done because the Queen had banned Christianity and wanted to expropriate any business owned by Caucasians. This being the case it is not classed as an invasion but rather it is a Coup D’ Etat...

Invasion 1. The Act of invading, especially the entrance of an armed force into a territory to conquer. 2. A large scale onset of something injurious or harmful, such as a disease. 3. An intrusion or encroachment. The territory of Hawaii was created on July 7th 1898, when Congress passed the Newlands Resolution ANNEXING Hawaii to the United States. You do not really have to invade a country with your army to take it over. You just have to flood that country with your own people and businesses. In the case of Hawaii it was such an easy place to take over because of a small population. The British tried the same thing in South Africa and that caused the Boar war. I do not think my facts are in any way wrong, but we all have our own opinions.

Quote: from Cennn3 on 5:30 am on Aug. 2, 2005 Grenada another country the USA invaded for no reason...
Cennn3 - You have to check your facts on more than Hawaii. Grenada was seized by a Marxist military council in October 1983. A old-line Stalinist, Bernard Coard, took over the country and executed Maurice Bishop, a doctrinaire but more flexible Marxist. Coard wanted to abolish all private enterprise on Grenada, even at the grass-roots level, and turn it into a carbon copy of Cuba. Also, Bishop had had misgivings about the construction of a military-grade airport with a 10,000-foot runway on Grenada, a country with a population of 100,000 and one of the smallest geographic areas in the Western Hemisphere. Cuban and Soviet military advisers were in charge of the project and Bishop had feared it his government would never gain control of the airport. Coard was considered absolutely loyal to the Soviet Union and Cuba and saw the spread of revolution as more important than prosperity for Grenada. He and his cohorts initially imprisoned Bishop, but when fighting broke out between supporters of the new and old Prime Ministers, Coard had Bishop and seven others shot. There were 1,000 U.S. medical students on the island at the time and they were in acute danger. U.S. forces and those of six other Caribbean nations invaded Grenada to rescue the students and restore order. The ringleaders of the coup and their hundreds of Cuban advisers were arrested. U.S. forces left about two months later and free elections were reinstituted the following year. Since then, Grenada has been a democratic country. Saving the lives of 1,000 American students and instituting democracy are very good reasons for the two-month intervention in Grenada.

So the people in Grenada had a coup between themselves and because of the acute danger to some medical students the USA invaded the country. Yeah right seems like a good reason to invade a country to me. Is that the American version of events. And what has it got to do with the USA if a country has a coup or civil war. NOTHING. Just like Vietnam and Korea and Cuba. Nothing to do with America. It is that the government of America does not like communists. My belief is you should let countries work it out on their own. Like the old Soviet Union and the Eatern block who are now mostly democratic and the USA did not invade them. China is a communist state and they seem to be doing ok now.

Saving 1,000 American lives is an excellent reason to invade another country, especially a tiny one in the throes of a civil war between two insane factions. It is the function of the U.S. government to protect the lives and interests of its people. This ain't no Never Never Land. There are conflicts between countries and when they can't be solved through peaceful negotiations, then military actions are sometimes the only alternative. A massive military airport on Grenada controlled by the Soviets and Cubans would have been an enormous threat to the U.S. and could have cost hundreds of thousands of U.S. lives. I certainly hope it was never necessary for U.S. forces to intervene, but unfortunately it is.

Still need to check your facts Cennn3, Prior to being annexed a territory needs to make a request to the US Senate and it must be sponsored by a Senator. This is why Guam was annexed (the people wanted it) but the rest of the Marinas Is was not (the US Navy wanted but the residents did not). What happened in Hawaii was that the Queen was deposed in a Coup D’ Etat (and imprisoned I believe) by the wealthy farmers. They requested to be annexed by the US and they were. Fremont did the same in California (overthrowing the Dons who held land rights from Mexico) and that was Sam Houston's intent for Texas (though that was a revolution and not a Coup D’ Etat). In each case (Hawaii, Texas, and California) the areas existed as independent republics prior to annexation by the US...

Evil and China, Also Guam was not annexed...it was ceded to the US by the Treaty of Paris from Spain, the US then put it under the control of the dept of the navy. This is too easy....but it is funny reading your excuses for the invasion of Grenada. Building a long runway? lol. My theory is the US was afraid that the 1000 medical students would return to the US and practice medicine!

Indeed a Coup D’ Etat as I said. The Marines were used on the authority of the Local Commander and not by direction of the Department of War (similar to what was done in Morocco at the same time to attempt to capture the Arab chief Raisuli). As it was a civilian adminstration was set up and Hawaii was a republic for over 4 years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Hawaii All in all this was less like the invasion of Grenada and more like the Coup D’ Etat the US sponsored in Nicaragua... BTW RyeMan: PBS is far from a neutral source of information. The wikipedia gives a far more balanced description of what happened. Also it was not until after WWII that Guam was given formal territoral status and a civilian government. Additionally in the early 1960's the Chammro people became US citizens via the Organic Act.
